Despite the announcement of the Windows 8 Pro toting Surface Pro, back in June, so far only the RT edition has appeared on the market and has, as expected, failed to attract a huge number of sales, something which Microsoft can largely blame on its over-the-top pricing.

Microsoft Surface Pro

At long last, however, the product we've all been waiting for, the Surface Pro, has been announced for a January release. The unit will be available in two editions, the only dividing factor the level of Solid Stage Storage; these will be standalone products and a keyboard/cover attachment will cost extra.

  • Surface Pro 64GB - $899 (£630)
  • Surface Pro 128GB - $999 (£700)
  • Touch/Type Cover - £109.99
The Surface Pro will feature the same VaporMg case as the RT edition, though dimensions will be thicker, in-order to house the device's more powerful componentry, with a small vent present around the unit. Moving up from the Surface RT, the display is now 1080p at 10.6in. You'll also receive 4GB of RAM, a Mini Display Port, USB 3.0 and the 600dpi Pen, all details we knew from Microsoft's initial announcement.

What has now been confirmed is that punters will receive a third-gen Ivy Bridge Core i5 processor with Intel HD 4000 graphics, dashing hopes of a power-friendly Haswell core, which leaves us wondering just how/why Microsoft managed to let the Surface Pro slip beyond the Christmas period.

If Microsoft isn't too harsh on the pound, we think that it has the right price-point for the Pro this time around, though, without Haswell as a clear advantage, it'll have some competition from Sony's Vaio Duo, which is available with a similar specification (sliding keyboard and pen included) for £999, though, most importantly, this specification can scale up for those who want something really high-end, this may come down to who has the right 'magic' balance.

Not bad price wise although I still dont get why the case isnt included :S
The keyboard you mean? Yes I agree. Price wise looks good to me given what you get - the UK price of the RT was very close the US one too so it could work out well for those who want a tablet-cum-ultrabook.

I really want one of these, Ultrabook utility but is even more portable and comfortable for the sofa web browsing… $999 to GBP and + VAT is about £750, which I'd pay and given that it's Ultrabook level hardware seems a fair price.

But couldn't agree more on the cover being included… I really am put off by the total rip-off price for those covers, especially the type one which I'd want… I can buy the most splendiferous from Logitech for less…

This: http://www.logitech.com/en-gb/product/6541?crid=27 - £89.99 RRP

This: http://www.logitech.com/en-gb/product/bluetooth-illuminated-keyboard-k810?crid=26 - £89.99 RRP

Even this for the usually unfrugal iPad crowd: http://www.logitech.com/en-gb/product/ultrathin-keyboard-cover?crid=1325&wt.ac=ps|9859 is £89.99 RRP

See the theme here? But they want £109.99 for that basic non-wireless and no-frills type cover. Jokers.

I agree - but OTOH I would say that having a keyboard that's powered by the device is better, and also I would have to say it's pretty innovative in itself. Still should be there by default - for the pro.

Yes powered by the device is better and it's a step forward for tablets but really it's a much simpler product than any of those Logitech solutions (it lacks batteries, wireless, LEDs etc) for a much higher price and as such I think it's a total rip off.
