Mobile network provider, O2, has launched a new, 'Mobile Wallet' app that will allow users to make payments and transfers of up to £500 to any UK mobile number, using either a pre-paid visa card or attached bank account, with the app also enabling easy product price comparisons.

O2 has confirmed that payment, through this method, has already been accepted by more than 100 retailers, amongst who are Comet, Debenhams, Sainsbury's Direct and Tesco Direct. Whilst O2 currently has 200,000 customers on its network with NFC payment capabilities, with the number expected to increase rapidly over the year, the firm has held off on implementing contactless payments due to a lack of presence of payment terminals.

It's clear that O2, like other providers and banks, wishes to introduce and familiarise customers with the idea of mobile transactions, however, whilst the service is currently free to consumers, the firm plans to charge a 15p fee for each money message/transfer made with the new system.

It appears as though O2 isn't the only network provider that wishes to capitalise on a new payment system, with the firm seemingly only taking this solo initiative due to delays in a joint plan proposed by itself, Vodafone and EverythingEverywhere, to introduce a national mobile payments service in-time for the London Olympics. The hold-up has been caused by an anti-competitive investigation, with smaller firms, such as Three, left out of negotiations over the new standard.

NFC payments and, to a lesser extent, long-range wireless mobile payments, are the future, however the idea of a cost being passed onto the consumer is highly unappealing. This writer hopes that whatever national standard does eventually make it through the gates, it's one that better respects the country's history in battling against bank charges and fees.

Who do these ‘easier’ transaction methods actually benefit… i cannot see the appeal at all and i dont think i know anyone who can. This has to purely be to the advantage of the banks and network providers, no-one else.
Agree with Biscuit… I don't see this as convenient either, cash is more convenient.

So I cab swop my debit/credit card for using my phone - at a cost of 15p per transaction.. but I still need my wallet so I can carry other cards, cash, condoms etc etc…
Plus my phone is more appealing to steal than my bulging condom filled wallet - so the risk is much greater of have this convenience stolen or even used fraudulently.

This idea is complete rubbish and the consumer has not jumped for it at all. Big fail , but clearly the banks and mobile companies have invested too much to amid fail yet.

PS I'm married, no condoms in my wallet - no point when married as sex goes out the window!!
This article really confused me…. I first thought that O2 just released a “Wallet” app that allowed contactless NFC payments on your phone.

But it turns out that is it just another Paypal that uses your phone number to send money, instead of your name/email. The “O2 Wallet App” is just a medium for sending money, like a Paypal App. This “O2 Wallet” can be linked to a “O2 Money” account that will send you a “physical Visa card” that has a NFC chip built in, like the current ones on Barclay Cards. Why would I want to link my bank account/ debit card to this service so that I get another Debit card to cram into my condom filled wallet?? Makes no sense, especially when they charge you extra £xx for doing “almost anything” after looking at their fee list and conditions…

The “O2 Wallet” App's built-in Barcode scanner/Deal Finder is no different that using Google Goggles/ Google Shopper.

Eventually… they will enable it so that you can use your phone to make contactless NFC payments…..

Someone please explain the point of this product/app…???

Personally waiting for Google Wallet to come to the UK so that I can make true NFC payments through my phone.

What a waste of 15 minutes of my life researching this…..
why on earth would you be waiting for google wallet so you can make NFC payments? Please explain to me the actual advantage of this over currency
