If bling is your thing...

Apple's iPhone 4 has been pimped and blinged-out with diamonds, worth a staggering £5m for a super-rich Aussie businessman.

The handset, that is sure to have WAGs and rappers salivating and pampered heiresses rifling through daddy's designer man-bag for a platinum card, is decked out with over 500 perfect diamonds, racking up 100 carats, The Daily Mail reported.

The Apple logo itself is reportedly composed of 53 diamonds on a back plate of rose gold, but the most impressive feature is the interchangeable home button - which can either be a 7.4 carat pink diamond or 8 carat white one, if the owner wishes to be more, erm, subtle.

The designer responsible for this work of art or monstrosity, depending on how you look at it, is 38 year-old British designer Stuart Hughes who was commissioned to make not one but two bespoke handsets for a businessman down under.

"It was a fantastic challenge and I am really pleased with the end result - the phones look superb. It is amazing that someone is prepared to spend £5 million on a phone, I doubt it will get used because it is worth so much money. It would be a disaster if it was ever lost," he reportedly said.

There is no mention of whether such high-spec building materials have solved the phone's reception problems, but it does come in a protective case, which although durable and sturdy is not pocket-friendly as it is reportedly a 7kg lump of imperial pink granite lined with leather.

Hughes is renowned for his precious gadgets after gold plating a Nokia handset back in 2003 and he is believed to be a favourite with the fashion fraternity including Chanel's Karl Lagerfeld who is reportedly a regular customer, snapping up Hughes' cheaper creations which typically range between £1,800 and £22,000.

Here's an image of the hot handset courtesy of The Daily Mail...we'll take four.

well you would still need to put the free cover over it to get any reception. :D
I'd question the statement that it's “worth” £5m, personally, but I suppose that depends on your definition of worth ;)
Do the offer a service to prize all the diamonds off the worthless piece-of-crap phone in 5 years time? I hope they do…

Surely it's defined by what people are prepared to pay.

It depends how you're using the word worth. In the terms of your article then yes, it does mean that, and I guess a lot of people would agree with you. But which is worth more, a £5m blinged iphone, or £5m of medicine sent to a developing country…? Shouldn't worth be about more than just money?

Oh, and this isn't a dig at the article btw; it's more of a gentle rant against the human condition in general ;)
