Amazon is giving away £100 / $100 of free apps until Sunday

Amazon has started a summer give-away in the UK (and in the USA: mouse-over 'Shop by department', and then 'Appstore for Android' to see the offer) offering up to £100 of free apps to users of its Android App Store. Highlights among these freebies are some top utilities and entertainment titles including; media streaming system app Plex, Notepad+, OfficeSuite Professional, Splashtop Remote Desktop HD, Ravensword: Shadowlands and AccuWeather Platinum.

The giveaway spans today, the 27th and tomorrow, the 28th June. It is said to include 30 of the most popular apps available on the Amazon App Store. Amazon customers who don't currently use a Kindle device can get these apps on their regular Android smartphone, tablet or other device by downloading the Amazon App Store app from here (USA link here) via your device, or scanning the QR code shown below with your device. You also need to have the option for installing apps from 'unknown sources' checked in your Android device security settings.

The apps are roughly categorised into entertainment, games travel and office genres. Hopefully there are some titles here to appeal to HEXUS readers who own Android devices. I have previously 'bought' Plex for Android for £2.99 ($4.99) with some free Amazon coins so don't need to snaffle it this time around. Other notably useful freebies are the MyBackup Pro app, which usually costs £3.03 ($4.99) via the Google Play Store, and the highly rated Jump Desktop and Splashtop HD apps for remote desktop control.

As a cynic, I'd say there is no such thing as a free App - so I'd need to look at the T&Cs very carefully.

Beat me to it. And I was, albeit quickly, which maybe is why you beat me to it.

My initial impression is nothing too onerous, or at least, no more so than other “app stores”.

At a guess, it's about promoting their App store, and getting it installed in the first place. I.e. about trying to “buy” a bit of market share with this giveaway. Amazon like to dominate markets, and in this one, they're very much an also-ran, at least, for now.

Will I install it? I'll look again more carefully, but I doubt it. Not because of T&Cs, but just because for the odd item I might like, I'd rather not mess about installing Amazon's thingy to get them, even if that means buying them. Or doing without.

Last time I used it you needed to have the amazon app store installed for them to work, so no deleting the amazon app afterwards…been a while since I bothered with amazon app store if I'm honest.

I have used a couple of the programs though and I can comment on the ones below :)
officesuite professional (got it cheap on google :)) - it worked with everything I've thrown at it so far
business calendar pro - not the prettiest app but probably the most functional calendar I've used.
splashtop - it works, needs program on pc, but I don't approve of their ‘upgrade’ policy for android users versus iOS so I just use MS's remote desktop as I use windows :)

Yep. And some of them also periodically ask you to log in. That said, on the last one of this kind of sale I got Convertor Pro which turned out to be a fantastic piece of software. More recently they were doing a collection of music apps for “free”.

Not sure if there's much in this collection that I fancy though - e.g. I'm using the free Splashtop client to get into my Windows 7 boxes and I don't feel I'm missing any features that'd make me want the “hassle” of having the “HD” version.

Yes, it's all about persuading people to use Amazon's app store rather than Google's.

Problem is, I rather regard that as being like offered a choice of being burned at the stake, or infected with Ebola. Neither alternative is terribly appealing.
