We teased readers a little with news of the PadFone 2 just yesterday, however ASUS has now officially unveiled the new device over in the east, with a European unveiling to take place in Milan later today and, most certainly, the PadFone 2's specifications are something to marvel at.

ASUS PadFone 2

Battery 2,140mAh

The display deploys Sharp's latest, super bright / energy efficient IGZO LCD technology, matched with an impressive 13-megapixel main camera. The CPU is Qualcomm's latest and greatest Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core with powerful Adreno 320 graphics. Both memory and battery are plentiful.

The phone utilises a new 'custom' USB docking connector, which connects to a new, slimmer, tablet dock, which features a 1,280 x 800 display, though the battery has been reduced from the 6,600mAh of the original, down to 5,000mAh, with the tablet unit featuring a weight of 514g.

The device will be available in Taiwan from next week, with international dates to come shortly. Eager readers may have already noted that this device features support for European 4G bands as well. Taiwanese prices range from £384 to £467 for the standalone phone in various storage sizes, whilst the tablet can be had as a bundle for an additional £128 or standalone for £192.

This sounds like a really powerful device! I wonder what you can do on a quad-core 1.5GHz phone that you can't on a dual-core…

Shame the tablet dock is only 1280x800, but I didn't see the display size, and the bundle price isn't too bad at all. I guess to really make use of the phone's hardware the tablet dock is a necessity.

Only negative is the lack of a micro-SD slot, but it seems to be how things are done these days, to get the upsell up front instead of the customer using far cheaper micro-SD cards to get the capacity they want.
£512 for a super high end phone and tablet (16Gb)…seems pretty reasonable to me. Weird they chose 1280x720 for the phone, but 1280x800 for the pad…hardly any extra resolution given the screen is going to be considerably bigger.

I wonder if this would be more than capable of running something like Battlefield 2, given the amount of RAM it now has….
Great idea, though I do think they missed a beat with the resolution of the tablet.

I might be being ignorant though, but what can the tablet dock do when there is no phone?
Another device showing a Panel made by Sharp - interesting…..

I think you'll need to add an extra £100 to all those prices for in the UK. We seriously get screwed in the UK on price. Some would say VAT but in Germany you can save over 10% on electronics and their VAT is 19% - in Poland things are even cheaper….
