Japanese company SmartPerf is now shipping its Scentee smartphone aroma gadget worldwide. The high-tech perfume puffer notification accessory was previously only available in the land of the rising sun. SmartPerf has now announced it will ship the olfactory attention grabber anywhere in the world.

The Scentee device attaches to your smartphone via the headphone socket and on Android (4+)and iOS (7+) can emit a fragrant puff and LED light pulse, depending upon the particular notification. DigitalTrends suggests that you might like a smell-the-coffee alert to wake you up "or associate new Facebook updates with the aroma of lavender"... However the FAQ says that there is one scent in a particular cartridge so you would have to switch cartridges to get different smells during the day. The Scentee also boasts a seven colour LED light.

SmartPerf says that users can take their smartphone communications to "another level," especially if you buy a Scentee for both yourself and a friend, family member or lover.

While the Scentee device just costs $35 and additional scent packs go for $5 the worldwide shipping is quite steep at $30. It's easy to buy now though, thanks to the newly implemented English website and PayPal shopping cart.

The scents available include rose, strawberry, coffee, lavender and rosemary. However there are several other interesting ones on the way including; coconut, jasmine, cinnamon roll, beef ribs, corn soup, curry, tongue and buttered potato. The 2.0ml scent packs last approximately 100 notifications with a 0.5 second spraying duration. I've not seen these refills but wonder if people can refill them with their own perfumes and fragrances.

The Scentee is only available in white at this time. It weighs 17g including scent cartridge and has a standby time of 24 hours plugged into your device. You can recharge it using microUSB.

This is absolutely bonkers… it's just a miniaturised USB-powered glade plug-in right? Why would anyone want one of these???
100 alerts/cartridge? Not much use as a call/text or email alert then. Plus it's only meant for use when left out on the side (unless you fancy a damp lavender smelling pocket), so the alarm-type alert makes sense, but then why not have a larger cartridge if it isn't for use on the go?

Modify to a larger cartridge, add in a new range of Evil(TM) smells, then use them in call centres with a release every time a complaint is received. Suddenly I wouldn't mind the non-free (lo-call) rate complaints numbers so much.
I honestly can't see a practical use of this device (unless paired with a body-odour or flatulence detector) - it strikes me as one of those “we did this because we could” gadgets.

Only in Japan …
There's something very fishy about this.

(Ah, problem solved - wrong cartridge)
This coupled With one of those fart apps from a few years ago …
