Explosive Xbox live title

Boom Boom Rocket is now available for download on the Xbox live arcade

Boom Boom Rocket is a hypnotic trance-inducing Xbox live arcade puzzle game from Bizarre Creations, the team who brought Project Gotham Racing 3 and the popular Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved to the Xbox 360.

The game follows the same vein as the likes of other rhythm based titles such as Parappa the Rapper or Bust-A groove, in which you need fast reflexes, good timing and efficient hand to eye co-ordination. The core gameplay element of pressing buttons in time to the beat of the music is back in Boom Boom Rocket, but the theme does take a explosive new twist as you set off fireworks, creating multi-coloured patterns in the night sky. In addition to being able to play your own tracks whilst sitting back and watching the impressive fireworks displays in all their full glory, 10 re-mixed classical tunes provide a lively soundtrack and are complimented splendidly by some impressive audio from the cackling, whizzing and fizzing of the pyrotechnics. The four game modes, endurance, freestyle, practice and standard are all designed to overload our senses with a combination of colour and sound. Boom Boom Rocket is shaping up to be a refreshingly buoyant Xbox live arcade game amongst the re-hashed titles currently on the marketplace.

The standard game mode is where you earn the points that will help you to rise up the online leader-board and is also where you'll be able to unlock the majority of the Xbox live achievements. At the top of the screen runs a fluorescent bar from left to right, which is the target line where you need to activate each of the fireworks. As the music begins, fireworks shoot up into the air toward the line and as they travel through the marker you need to press the relevant button on your control pad that corresponds with the colour of the firework (i.e. 'Y' for yellow). Alternatively, you can keep an eye out for the arrow symbol that rests on the end of each firework: for example, if the arrow is pointing left, you’ll need to press the 'X' button.

To explode a firework you need to press the corresponding button as close to the middle of the target line as possible in order to score points and fill up the bonus metre. Once the metre is full you can press one of your trigger buttons to activate the bonus mode and you'll then receive 16x the amount of points as well as being treated to the sounds of the 'oohs' and 'aahs' from the invisible spectators as you watch the rainstorm of fireworks decorate the sky with colour. Miss the target however and the bonus metre decreases meaning that you'll fail the song and have to start over.

As you complete songs you unlock bonus fireworks that take different forms, such as a heart or musical note symbol, and they can then be set off in future games
