Oooh, scary...Regular readers will know that I’m something of a fan of horror games. Not those ‘look-how-gruesome-I-can-make-everything-by-having-bits-of-body-flung-all-over-the-place’ games dripping in pixellated blood, but those games that rely on atmosphere and story-telling to draw you in before scaring the hell out of you.
I know that for many people the original F.E.A.R. wasn’t all that scary but I like to set the atmosphere for my games and I still stand by my assertion that F.E.A.R., played in the dark with the surround sound on, is one of the creepiest FPS games out. But moving on from that, I reckon that F.E.A.R.s AI is also still one of the best examples of AI you’ll find in a shooter today… and yes, that includes Crysis.
Anyhow, arguments over atmosphere and AI aside, the F.E.A.R. franchise has seen a few expansion packs since release and has graced the consoles with some success. Now we’re back to the PC with this latest ‘expansion’ which isn’t actually an expansion at all but a complete standalone title, F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate.
F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate picks up the story at roughly the same timeline as the original and runs pretty much parallel to the original F.E.A.R. story… but if you’re expecting another big dose of F.E.A.R. goodness you’re going to be a tad disappointed.
