Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is hoping that the PS3 will become the main focus of living room entertainment with PlayTV, a combined TV tuner and Personal Video Recorder for Playstation 3, which has a confirmed launch date in Europe of September 10th.

Although there has been no official announcement on price, the PlayTV website has let the cat out of the bag and revealed that the hardware will retail at £69.99.

PlayTV’s two TV tuners are High Definition ready and are able to view, record and play back High Definition signals in full HD1080P to complement PS3’s High Definition credentials.

The twin channel TV tuner peripheral and PVR software turns PS3 into a state of the art TV recorder, allowing users to watch, pause and record live TV. PlayTV will also record individual programmes or whole series1 to the PS3 hard drive for viewing later on the family TV, or for transferring to the PSP for remote viewing outside of the home.

European PS3 owners can also look forward to the PS3 video store, which launched in North America recently. Unfortunately though, Sony's David Reeve has confirmed that the service will will not be available in Europe until 2009.

So, will you be forking out for the service? Is £69.99 a reasonable price? Let us know in the HEXUS.community discussion forums.

Sounds good, only issue seems to be the Hard Drive space… really need 100gb+ drive for PVR function (HD Recordings??) bearing in mind the current Hard drive is also where all the PS3 demos etc are stored and taking space.
I think £69.99 is actually pretty good when you compare the price of a dual DVB-T tuner card for a PC (Nova-T 500 goes for £53 at scan). That card won't be capable of HD either.

The big question is….can it record TV and play a game at the same time? If not then thats a big downside.

EDIT: The playTV website says that you can play a game and record at the same time
i'm confused about this talk of HD

there's no finalised spec, nor even plans, for HD over terrestrial in the UK

Me too. Is the UK digital freeview system even capable of delivering HD? I'm assuming the tuners in the PlayTV box are DVB-T and its firmware upgradable.

Well you can get some HD channels via Freesat in the UK, similar to Freeview but - as you can probably guess - requires a connection to a satellite dish. I’m not entirely certain if PlayTV would support a Freesat signal though. Found little info on the matter.
