Bethesda has released the highly-anticipated suite of tools for modding the PC version of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Available on Steam, the Creation Kit allows players to add new characters, create new quests and make their own landscapes. You’ll need a bit of talent and imagination to get started, but the community wiki provides plenty of help.

To celebrate the launch of the Steam Workshop portal for Skyrim, Bethesda has released a few extra surprises, including a downloadable mod entitled Fall Of The Space Core, Vol 1, which allows you to take the Space Core character from Portal 2 on your adventures.

In addition, a free high-resolution texture pack can now be downloaded, providing your PC meets the required specifications.

From the press release:

"Experience The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim as you’ve never seen it before with the Skyrim High-Resolution Texture Pack. Make sure your system requirements exceed Skyrim’s recommended specs before attempting to install, including Windows Vista or 7 operating system, a minimum of 4GB of system RAM, and a DirectX 9.0c compatible NVIDIA or AMD ATI video card with at least 1 GB of RAM and the latest drivers."

If you’ve yet to experience the wonders of Skyrim, Steam has a special sale on for a limited time only, offering the open-world RPG for £23.29, a 33 percent discount.

(Oh, and you have run the normal launcher haven't you - if you use a shortcut to e.g. launch SKSE then you need to run the normal launcher and it'll download)
