Thecus Technology have recently announced a revamped version of the original Thecus N4100 NAS device, a device that is accredited with the achievement of getting the ball rolling for the company who were founded in 2004.

Just as, the company explain, the N4100 is renowned for delivering a high calibre of performance and an excellent feature set, the introduction of the device set a precedent in users NAS device expectations from then on.

The N4100+ NAS device is what Thecus have proudly announced recently and which, presents itself as a completely updated version of the original N4100, harnessing the latest Thecus innovations and functionality.

Processing power is delivered by a 600MHz Intel 80219 CPU which is supported by 128MB of DDR memory, whilst storage options come courtesy of four hard drive bays with facility to house four 3.5" SATA hard drives. This allows for up to 4TB of storage, together with RAID functionality (RAID levels 0, 1, 5 & JBOD), allowing users to tailor the level of data protection to their own needs.

Users keen on utilising the RAID functionality may also be keen to learn that management features such as auto rebuild, hot swap and hot spare are implemented to ensure minimal downtime, state Thecus, whilst networking comes courtesy of two Gigabit Ethernet ports, this allowing for users to get access to their data efficiently.

Target user groups include home users who, according to Thecus, will find the N4100+ invaluable thanks to features such as the built-in ITunes server, allowing users to stream their entire music libraries throughout their homes. The Mediabolic Media Server functionality is also cited as allowing the N4100+ to work with DLNA Certified media players. Download Manager is a further feature touted, that enables BT, HTTP and FTP downloading during off-peak hours, without the need for a PC, whilst the Print Server feature is described as allowing the sharing of one printer across a network of PCs.

Small to medium businesses are also in range of the target user groups for the N4100+ with the company describing how features such as multiple operating system support, thereby allowing for integration of the N4100+ into virtually any network, are attractive. A 30% power saving also leads to a lower total cost of ownership, compared to a PC, whilst the Thecus Backup Utility and Nsync promote proper data backup, the latter of which allows users to have the unit automatically upload files, at a designated time, to an external storage solution. Touted as being designed for SMBs, Nsync, according to Thecus, takes the guesswork out of data backup, whilst also enhancing data security.
