NVIDIA recalls all GeForce 8800 GTX partner products on eve of launch
The path of least resistance?Just in time for the launch of Windows Vista and the promise of a pre-Christmas sales rush, NVIDIA is set to launch a spanking new generation of 3D graphics accelerators.
Previously referred to by the ASIC name of G80, the flagship product is predictably named GeForce 8800 GTX and is set to be launched with a slightly less powerful variant GeForce 8800 GTS.
Of late, and perhaps starting with the launch of the NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX, HEXUS has applauded NVIDIA for finally setting the pace against its arch-rival AMD-ATI by simultaneously announcing products whilst, at the same time, making sure that there's a reasonable amount of stock on e-tailers shelves at the time of announcement.
However, product launches can be a perilous time for a manufacturer… and HEXUS received word that NVIDIA partners had been instructed to return GeForce 8800 GTX products to address significant 'technical issues'.
Knowing this may well negatively affect NVIDIA's plans to 'hard-launch' its forthcoming GeForce 8800 GTX, HEXUS touched base with NVIDIA and received the following confirmation: -
Some GeForce 8800 GTX boards that were built through our contract manufacturer had a simple BOM (Bill Of Materials) error - wrong resistor value. GeForce 8800 GTS boards are not affected by this.
These GeForce 8800 GTX boards were shipped to our Add-In-Card partners.
We have been working with them to pull these back and change the resistor to the correct value.
We believe we will still be able to hit our hard launch this week (Nov 8th) with the new GeForce 8800 GTX boards.
This is a testament to our execution as well as the execution of our Add-In-Card partners.
