Introduction

Sapphire Radeon X1950 Pro 256MiB

Today sees the launch of another SKU in ATI's desktop graphics line-up. Before you become overwhelmed with the possibility that it's R600 in the flesh, ready to roll, we have to report that Radeon X1950 Pro is debuting, becoming the new ATI midrange SKU.

ATI's X1900 GT, priced at around Ā£135, is currently a decent buy if you're looking for a well-rounded PCIe graphics card that's able to handle the latest games at sensible resolutions. It's derived from the impressive R580 core, so its heritage is good.

You'd expect X1950 Pro to be something different, perhaps using GDDR4 RAM like its bigger brother, the Radeon X1950 XTX. However, the truth is that X1950 Pro is, effectively, an X1900 GT with a number of additional tweaks. What's satisfying is that it'll retail at X1900 GT prices, so read on to see if ATI's new middleweight champ is the card that you'll be asking from Santa come this Christmas.
