Earlier this month, NVIDIA released its GeForce GTX 660 Ti range of cards, typically pricing in at £250. From our reviews of the 660 Ti card, we determined it to be a strong performance competitor, on average, besting AMD's Radeon HD 7870 in the gaming department.
However, we also noted some rather high UK pricing for the card, with overclocked variants priced too closely to the GeForce GTX 670 and, with stock offerings not proportionally differentiating themselves away from AMD's Radeon HD 7870, the GeForce 660 Ti was essentially stuck in retail limbo.
AMD has been quick to catch onto this weakness and has instigated further price drops on its Radeon HD 7850, 7870 and 7950 range of graphics cards. Whilst price changes are yet to trickle down to many stores, Scan Computers is offering a number of Radeon HD 7950s from £240, matching bone-stock NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti offerings in price and performance.
The revised pricing reflects a US announcement yesterday that AMD would be implementing the following price changes across the pond:
Card | Previous US price | New US price | New UK price |
Radeon HD 7950 | $349 | $319 | £240 |
Radeon HD 7870 | $299 | $249 | £199 |
Radeon HD 7850 | $239 | $209 | £160 |
We're still awaiting an official UK announcement, but it's clear that a price drop is taking place, at least in some stores, with it looking increasingly likely that AMD's performance range will become more affordable, country-wide, in the near future.
