The Motorola Xoom could be the first tablet to feature Ice Cream Sandwich, the new update to the Android operating system.

The rumour comes from Fudzilla, who claims it has heard repeatedly that Xoom will get Android 4.0 first. With Google in the process of buying Motorola, and both companies hosting events later today, it does make sense.

Google is set to unveil Ice Cream Sandwich at an event in Hong Kong today, while Motorola Mobility's in New York City where it’s rumoured it’ll unveil Xoom 2 alongside a new handset, the Motorola Droid RAZR.

Who's going to get first bite?

Bragging rights are up for grabs for whichever tablet-maker gets Android 4.0 first, with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, ASUS Eee Pad Transformer, Sony’s Tablet S and Tablet P all in line to receive the update. Will Google’s pending partnership with Motorola Mobility send it Xoom’s way first? We should find out later today.

Hmm, I can quite see why it'd make sense for Google-rola to get ICS first, which means that it's the 2nd place that's the big deal. Can't see Sony figuring in that, so it's a two-horse race between Samsung and Asus.

Personally - as a happy ET101 owner - I'd like to see Asus get there first, but in reality as long as ICS comes December/January time then I'm going to be pretty satisfied. Especially if it fixes that awful H'comb brower!
I think its a safe bet that it would get it…

The Xoom is the Google Android “reference” tablet isn't it? Is that the right way of describing it?

Same thing as the Nexus phones…always had the latest OS versions, and usually first to get updates, not having any kind of OS skin/customization, just vanilla android…
As long as the tabet s gets it pretty soon and Sony give us playstion pad linkup I`ll be happy :D
