Getting the ball rolling
Consumer electronics giant Sony has launched an on-demand 3D video service, for its compatible Bravia TVs, called 3D Experience.
This seems to be a tentative, initial step towards seeding the 3D content market, and takes the form of promotional video clips and trial content, rather than complete movies or whatever. From today it's available for free to anyone with a 3D capable TV with ‘Bravia Internet Video' sold since 2010. A 10 mbps Internet connection is also recommended.
Examples given of the kind of content available are Wimbledon 2011 and 3D movie trailers such as Green Hornet. It will also encourage the public to submit their own 3D efforts. The service is active from today in the U.K., Germany, France, the U.S. and Canada. Sony also plans to extend the service to its 3D-capable Blu-ray player.
While it's hard to judge without experiencing the service, this looks like just one small step towards seeding the 3D market - a process that is likely to take many years to complete. Still, you've got to start somewhere, and if Sony is able to demonstrate a compelling experience through this service, it may increase the momentum behind the 3D content industry.
