Our parents always told us that "if you're going to succeed, you've got to think big".  This week, it became clear that someone told Samsung the same thing when it was younger as it explained its ambitious plans for the future.

Obviously a lot of the attention at IFA has been on tablets, with the company's Galaxy Tab grabbing a lot of the headlines.  Even though the market could get pretty crowded, Samsung's Hankil Yoon told the Wall Street Journal that it wanted to ship 10 million of the slates in the next year.  This would work out to around a third of the expected tablet-market and make the company one of the key players in the rapidly expanding sector.

The electronics-giant has ambitions beyond just tablets, though, and wants to continue to grow its efforts in the smartphone-arena.  While it has traditionally been a major manufacturer of mobile phones in general - holding around 20 per cent marketshare - Samsung has found smartphones a tougher nut to crack.

However, with a renewed focus on Android - at the expense of Windows Phone 7 - and following successful launch of the well received Galaxy handsets, the company is ready to expand its piece of the pie.

Speaking at IFA, mobile-group head JK Shin again told the WSJ that the company wanted to be responsible for ten per cent of smartphone sales by the end of this year.  While that's an optimistic target, the company has also adjusted its predictions upwards by over 30 per cent for the year to 25 million units sold, and believed it could ship 50 million smartphones in 2011.
