To those that take their online gaming seriously, having a low ping is crucial.  Unfortunately, the internet is a pretty crowded place these days and other users' traffic can easily get between you and your server of choice.

Demon Internet may win over a few fans in the gaming community, though, by launching a service that prioritises packets from games over other traffic on its network.  The new Demon Game Pro broadband package will try to offer the lowest latencies while providing speeds of 20Mb downstream and 1Mb upstream.

Demon's Matt Cantwell added that "we know how important a good broadband connection is to the gaming community, and we are excited to be launching this product which has been designed to meet the specific needs of gamers".

The company is even actively promoting the service for user-hosted game servers by providing customers with a static IP address.

The price of being the number one priority in the eyes of your ISP is a relatively reasonable £21.99 per month on a 12-month contract, or £23.99 on a three-month contract.

This announcement is especially interesting given all of the talk lately about net neutrality.  While Demon seems to have created a service that supports the needs of its customers, it is still offering a better internet experience to those who are willing to pay for it.  Although the company claims that the prioritisation won't noticeably impact normal users, it has technically created a tiered service where the data of one user is given more worth than that of another.

All well and good if your exchange is ADSL2+ enabled. Starting to think mine will never change so i constantly get shafted price and download wise.
Personally I've always used BT as my ISP and have always had a great ping. TBH this would put me off demon, as they as basically shouting out “we shape our traffic” - there shouldn't be any need for traffic shaping.
Well I'm with Be* at the moment and I find it hard to believe that they could beat the pings that I get with Be*. I always have the best ping. Once I had a ping of 2 :D

Not really - they've said that some data types will have higher priority. It's an important distinction and means that it doesn't really fall foul of net neutrality, just like throttling p2p packets doesn't.

However it'd be interesting to see how much affect the end provider really has.
Sounds interesting - what are Demon like as an ISP these days? Haven't really heard much from them since the 56k days!!
