While Flash currently has some rudimentary support for 3D and graphics acceleration, the facilities are somewhat limited. However, the post promises some exciting developments for anyone “into 3D development for games, augmented reality or just interactive stuff”. Unfortunately, the entry isn’t much more forthcoming, as Thibault seems to be keeping things intentionally cryptic.
“Now you may wonder, what does this means [sic], what kind of 3D are we talking about? What kind of API? True textured z-buffered triangles? GPU acceleration? Even better? What I can say is forget what you have seen before, it is going to be big.”
While Adobe could be jumping on the stereoscopic bandwagon, it seems a lot more likely that we’ll see the announcement of a new, more-powerful 3D rending API. With the latest version of Flash already capable of tapping into a GPU to accelerate video and the plethora of Flash games out there, this seems like a fairly logical step.
Of course, all will be revealed on October 27th. The conference will kick-off with a keynote speech on the 25th, where we have no doubt that the future of Flash will be revealed in full.
