Remember the TPQ-1200 PSU introduced by Antec at the tail end of 2009?
The 1,200W unit - part of the high-end TruePower Quattro line - features six +12V rails and Antec's own PowerCache technology. At close to Ā£200 it's overkill for most users, but in an effort to show enthusiasts what they're missing, Antec has been putting the TPQ-1200 through its paces to show that the unit has plenty in reserve.
Just how far can you push it? Well, going to the extreme, Antec hooked one up to EVGA's Classified SR-2 motherboard, four GeForce GTX 480 graphics cards in SLI and a pair of overclocked Intel Xeon E5640 processors running at 4GHz apiece. Here's the proof:
The power supply doesn't miss a beat. Pulling a continuous 1,700W, it highlights that Antec's top-of-the-line PSU is designed to go beyond the listed specification.
Taking into account that the PSU is rated at 80 PLUS Silver - and is therefore 85 per cent efficient - we can determine that it's delivering around 1,400W of power to the system.
Confirming its high-end credentials, the TPQ-1200 is now the first PSU to officially receive NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 3-Way SLI Certification, as well as certification for both NVIDIA Quad SLI and ATI CrossFire.
The video demo should alleviate the doubts of any would-be enthusiast buyers, but we like the fact that it demonstrates the crescendo of four GeForce GTX 480s working in tandem. These cards have to be heard to be believed.
