Plextor has today joined the burgeoning market of affordable network-attached storage (NAS) solutions for the home/office user with the launch of the PX-NAS2.
The two-bay unit, pictured above, is designed to be an easy-to-use central storage solution - even without technical knowledge, says Plextor - and aims to simplify the often arduous task of file sharing across multiple devices in the home.
Measuring 135.4mm x 120.3mm x 254.5mm and weighing 1.6kg, the compact unit supports up to two 3.5in SATA II drives and a maximum capacity of 4TB.
Automated backups to multiple locations are supported, as is Apple Time Machine, and the unit is DNLA compliant - ensuring streaming support with popular devices such as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games consoles.
Targeting home users, the PX-NAS2 offers a duo of USB ports with one-touch backup from Flash drives and cameras, whilst the bundled Plextor Utility promises to quickly detect and configure all attached devices.
Plextor isn't saying a whole lot in regards to performance - which to us indicates the PX-NAS2 won't be the quickest two-bay NAS out the block - but it's the price that Plextor hopes will appeal. The standard drive-less unit will be available in May priced at £156, whilst models equipped with 1TB or 2TB of storage will be available priced at £248 and £339, respectively.
