Portable storage solutions equipped with a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface are now beginning to trickle through in numbers, and the latest comes from U.S. manufacturer Active Media Products in the form of the Aviator-2.
The external drive, measuring roughly 80mm x 130mm, is small enough to carry around in your pocket and promises a big increase in performance when compared to a bandwidth-starved USB 2.0 device.
Available with 64GB or 128GB of MLC NAND Flash memory housed in its steel casing, Aviator-2 offers read and write speeds of up to 200MB/s and 160MB/s, respectively. That's about six times quicker than some of the fastest USB 2.0 pen drives currently on the market.
Trouble is, the combination of an SSD drive and a USB 3.0 enclosure isn't going to come cheap. Active Media Products currently has its 64GB and 128GB models listed at $259.95 and $449.95, respectively.
Out of your reach? Fear not, as Active Media Products is also making available a standalone Aviator-2 enclosure for $34.95. The enclosure is able to accommodate any 2.5in drive, but you'll need one of SSD variety to make full use of the bandwidth available from the USB 3.0 interface.
