Western Digital has rolled out its first consumer hard drive to feature a third-generation SATA 6Gbps interface in the form of a new 1TB Caviar Black.
The 3.5in drive, pictured right and given model number WD1002FAEX, makes use of a rotational speed of 7,200rpm and comes equipped with a 64MB cache - double the size of its SATA 3Gbps predecessor.
With a 7,200rpm hard drive unlikely to suffer the bandwidth restrictions of a SATA 3Gbps interface, the upgraded model is likely to offer little in terms of real-world performance benefits - despite the larger cache.
Owning the latest tech will cost you a little extra, though. Western Digital's 1TB SATA 6Gbps Caviar Black drive is currently available priced at around £87, making it roughly £15 more than a equivalent-capacity Caviar Black drive with a SATA 3Gbps interface and a smaller cache.
