Microsoft launched its latest operating system on October 22, 2009, and HEXUS took a seven-part look at Windows 7. Like many professional commentators, we were impressed with what we saw, but effusive praise isn't always inextricably linked to booming sales.

Market research company, NPD, has some interesting figures for Windows 7 vs. Vista. Based on measurements for the week of October 18-24, 2009, Windows 7 boxed unit sales, including pre-orders, were 234 per cent higher than Vista's first-week tally.

“Microsoft’s program of early low-cost pre-sales, high visibility marketing, and aggressive deals helped make the Windows 7 software launch successful,” said Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD. “In a slow environment for packaged software Windows 7 brought a large number of customers into the software aisles.”

Revenue, though, was 'only' 82 per cent higher, with NPD citing pre-order discounts and a lack of promotional activity for the higher-cost Ultimate version.

The best-selling Windows 7 SKUs were all upgrade packs, NPD noted, with Home Premium selling for an average $76, Professional for $147, and a three-users Home Premium upgrade for $149.

Did you buy Windows 7 on or near launch day? How much did you pay? Is it worth it?

Yes I bought it, it cost me £34.00 included extended download service for Windows 7 Professional Upgrade. And yes it is worth it.

However I had to do some console magic to turn the downloaded data into a bootable ISO image, but that didn't take to long, quicker than waiting for a disk to shiped to me from the suppliers anyway.

I also payed £72.99 for a retail copy of Windows 7 Home Premium for my HTPC.
So… Lower retail price = More Sales + More Profit. Lets hope other companies follow up with great promotional offers, especially those who claim they have been hit hard by piracy.
All the people I know that have been running pirated MS operating system, in many cases dating back to 3.1, have purchased win7. With the pre orders, and various deals its just not worth the hassle of pirating.

Wow. That's a change. The price is actually reasonable? People are willing to pay for it?

Microsoft, hear that, people think paying £200 for your OS is bad, but are happy to pay up to around £70… maybe there is a wee hint in there for you somewhere.

The thing I like the best is the differences between Operating Systems versions actually make sense. Like it used to be you had to buy Vista Ultimate if you actually wanted a half decent experience on your machine. Now Home Premium is actually more than enough for everyone.
got it all installed a couple of days ago, got to say im a big fan. so easy to use aswell
