Acer has issued a voluntary recall for five different models of its Acer Aspire Timeline notebooks.

According to the Taiwanese manufacturer, affected systems feature a microphone cable that "may overheat when extreme pressure" is applied repeatedly to the left palm rest".

Acer states that affected models were manufactured prior to September 15th 2009 and include model numbers AS3410, AS3810T, AS3810TG, AS3810TZ and AS3810TZG.

If that sounds like you, Acer recommends you head over to a dedicated website on which you can enter your notebook serial number to determine whether or not your system needs to be serviced.

The number of faulty systems has not been disclosed.

I wasn't aware microphone cables even got warm…!
Is it me or do Acer products generally lack in quality.

I was fixing up a couple of Acer laptops and they do had hardware faults.

Dell might be more expensive but it seems that their stuff is built to last.
I don't know, I've been more than happy with all the Acers we've bought at work over a good half a decade now.

They never shout out “build quality!”, but we've had very, very few failures or quality problems. We had a laptop motherboard die on us once, and the RMA procedure was excellent (and based in the UK), contrary to their reputation. Ever since the only failure has been a batch from a couple of year ago where the hard drives seemed to be from a bad batch, as we've had 3 out of 4 fail, unfortunately outside of the warranty.
