Sony's VAIO range of notebooks are known to be some of the best-looking portable systems around, and the latest - the VAIO NW - is no exception.

The system, pictured below, is just 30mm thick but packs a fair amount of tech into its sleek-looking chassis.

Inside the VAIO NW lives a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 processor, 4GB of DDR2 memory, a discrete ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 graphics card, a 400GB hard disk and a Blu-ray optical drive.

The display measures 15.5in and provides a 1,366x768 resolution - not quite enough to fulfil the full-HD impact of Blu-ray, but the notebook does offer HDMI out allowing for easy Blu-ray playback on big-screen displays.

It's certainly a looker, and it'll be available in walnut brown, birch white and rattan silver finishes.

Sony hasn't yet clarified details of UK availability, but the VAIO NW will launch in the US later this month with a price tag of $880, or $800 for a model without Blu-ray functionality. Factor in US taxes and that roughly equates to a tempting £600.

An affordable Vaio, no way! XD

Might tell my dad to get this.
The screen resolution is very low, and I like a lot of work space. Other than that looks like an excellent package if the price is indeed £600.

Larger then the average 1280x800.

Agree that full HD would be better but then you are probably looking at extra premium on top.
Blu-ray on the road ? I wonder if it's of any use at all and can play a couple of films without being plugged in. It's a fine piece of kit with powerful hardware, can it last “on the road” I doubt it.
It reminds me of the first few years of sony's portable dvd players, they couldn't play a full movie without running out of battery either.

Edit just checked.. 1.5 hrs life. That is no doubt with screen turned down, drive not spinning etc, taking real life usage to less than 1hr.. Useless.
