Thecus has been teasing its N5500 since back before CeBIT, and the five-bay unit - pictured below - is now finally making its way to retail.

Thecus' successor to the N5200 Pro arrives with the promise of being the "most advanced five-bay NAS unit yet" and features five hot-swappable 3.5in bays, providing a maximum supported capacity of 10TB.

Upping the ante, Thecus has equipped the N5500 with a dual-DOM design, ensuring continuous operation should one module fail. There's support for iSCSI initiators - allowing for enterprise users to access the N7700 as a direct-attached storage device via the Internet or a LAN - but the unit can also be configured as just a NAS or DAS.

As expected, there's support for multiple RAID volumes, including RAID 0,1,5,6 and JBOD, as well as RAID expansion and RAID level migration. The feature list is seemingly endless, but Thecus appears keen to point out its "next-generation" Ajax-based web interface, providing access to all the usual media goodness - including iTunes server, photo web server and media server.

The N5500 is currently available to pre-order from SCAN.co.uk* at a cost of Ā£678.49, and Thecus' complete specification can be found over at the official product page.
