If you're in the market for a graphics card, there's a good chance you're eyeing up ATI's Radeon HD 4770. Launched at the tail end of last month, the card produces nearly a teraflop of performance for around £80. Given the figures, it's no wonder our review concluded that the card simply "makes a lot of sense".

Looking ahead, however, in-the-know readers are likely to have assumed that the knock-on effect of such a card should entail price drops for the next step up in class - namely ATI's Radeon HD 4870. As it turns out, those assumptions are now coming to fruition as we're seeing some of the cheapest 4870s ever available.

Head out to some of the big-name etailers today and you'll find prices creeping closer to the £100 mark. Over at SCAN.co.uk*, the XFX Radeon HD 4870 512MB is currently being sold for as little as £125.90 - a healthy price, considering similar cards were priced closer to £170 not too long ago.

Shop around, and we reckon further savings of £10 to £15 can be made. Now might just be a good time to pick one up.

4870 for £115 :)

Its a knock on effect yes, but the 5000 series is also around the corner

As you well know, around the corner in this market can mean anything from two weeks to six months. Or in this case, ATi are planning for around July time.

I'm wanting the X2 cards to drop in price. And ATi Stream to be easier to program.

Im sure if people are going to spend over 100 quid on a graphics card they can wait 2 months…
“Wait for the 5000 series to show up”

It was complacent thinking about how the next generation was going to be so much better that made everybody so dissappointed when the HD 2900 showed up and was the same with the original Phenom ;)

Base your buying decisions on what's available now, and for me that means that there £115 4870 (even if it is ‘only’ 512mb) is looking mighty tempting…
We've still not got any games that really take advantage of the features in a 4870 over say a x1950xt, so I don't think you're really shooting yourself in the foot if you went for a 4870 now. It's an amazing amount of power for the money, and the next generation of cards won't be absolutely required for quite some time yet.
