Despite the ongoing ruckus between Intel and NVIDIA, we're still eagerly awaiting the first round of Atom-based netbooks/nettops to be built on NVIDIA's ION platform.

The promise of a relatively low-cost, low-power system that's able to able to decode high-def content and provide modest gaming functionality is too good to ignore. Fortunately, it looks as though Acer is well on the way to fulfilling that promise as a selection of leaked slides have revealed its forthcoming Hornet nettop.

The Acer Hornet, pictured below, is yet to be officially confirmed by Acer but is believed to feature NVIDIA's ION platform coupled with an Intel Atom processor. Whether the CPU is single-core or dual-core remains to be seen, and there's no news on the amount of installed memory.

Nonetheless, with NVIDIA's GeForce 9400M graphics at its heart, the system could make for an ideal media extender and Acer looks set to bundle an air mouse to help make TV-based navigation that little bit easier.

Acer's slides reveal that the system will be mountable to the rear of VESA-compliant displays, and it claims the system will cost just a "couple of hundred dollars".

It'd seem a bit odd to pair an Ion-based nettop with anything less than the dual-core 330.
About bloody time.. been waiting for an Ion system to ship (if this is “imminent”)

Ideally yes a dual core Ion system….. and a nicer case than that….

Maybe AppleTV Mk2 will be Ion.. who knows…

Apart from the 330 not supporting EIST - not great in an alledged low-power system ;) Dunno if Intel are going to produce a dual-core that *will* have EIST…

I'm still mind-blown by the fact that you can buy a mini-itx platform with built in Atom 330 for about Ā£75 - four virtual cores! WTF!??!?!?!
