Alienware has unveiled a notebook that pushes the boat out in terms of mobile performance by incorporating the world's first mobile Intel quad-core processor and AMD CrossFireX graphics cards.
The notebook, dubbed the M17 and pictured below, costs £999 and upward depending on specification. Throw in its two most advertised features - a quad-core Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9300 and a pair of AMD Mobility Radeon HD 3870 GPUs in CrossFireX configuration - and you'll find the price-tag quickly tips over the £2,000 mark.
Users can configure up to 4GB of DDR3 memory, and up to 1TB of storage in RAID 0. The standard 17in display offers a disappointing 1,440 x 900 resolution but a 1,920x1,200 WUXGA upgrade is available. If you really want to splash out, you can throw in a Blu-ray drive and a TV tuner, too.
It's an extreme specification notebook for those who've got the moolah, but it sure isn't pretty. It's jam-packed with high-end components, but the Alienware-provided image makes its exterior look as square as an IBM ThinkPad 700 from 1992.
Maybe we've seen too many super-thin notebooks over the past year or so, but the M17 now just looks far too thick.
