AMD has its monthly release of Catalyst drivers down to a tee, and October's launch of Catalyst v8.10 introduces a particularly useful feature: the ability for users to control the speed of their Radeon HD 4000 series fan.

If you aren't interested in modying XML files in order to alter fan speed, the new software will allow you to do so at the click of a button within the ATI Catalyst Control Center Overdrive tab.

The release brings the Radeon display driver up to version 8.541 and unlike previous releases, AMD has listed to specific performance improvements. Users of Radeon HD 4000 series or Radeon HD 3800 series products can expect a performance increase of up to 15 per cent in Unreal Tournament 3, and CrossFire users can expect a jump of up to 5 per cent in Prey.

Other new features to make the release include a Force Component Video detection option - allowing users to force certain modes to be shown when configuring a component display - and support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.7.

For a complete breakdown of what Catalyst 8.10 has to offer, including all the resolved issues, please refer to the official release notes (PDF).

They don't need this. It's optional.
