Intel and Facebook have announced plans to work together in an effort to optimise Facebook's hardware and software.

As part of the agreement, Facebook, the ever-popular social network, will deploy thousands of Intel Xeon-based servers to help scale its rapid growth. Facebook engineers are said to have "rigorously tested and benchmarked" a number of server platforms before opting for Intel's Xeon 5400 processor.

In addition, Intel will assist Facebook in focusing on technology evaluation, benchmarking and optimisation of software for Intel architecture.

Kirk Skaugen, vice president and general manager of Intel's Server Platforms Group, said:

Intel is excited to engage with Facebook as they are a dynamic force in the evolution of the Internet. Facebook's selection of Intel Xeon processors for their next round of infrastructure growth is a testament to the performance, energy efficiency and technology benefits Intel can provide.

Both companies state that the joint effort will benefit the entire Web 2.0 industry. By working together, Intel hopes to improve software performance on its servers, as well as increased infrastructure efficiency.

The big-name deal is Intel's second in just a matter of weeks. Earlier this month, the semiconductor manufacturer announced that its processors would power the future of DreamWorks animation studios.
