Intel posted record-breaking first-quarter revenue of $9.7bn (Ā£4.92bn) yesterday.

Operating income came in at $2.1bn, representing a 23 per cent year-on-year increase.

Net income, however, was down 12 per cent to $1.4bn, compared with Q1 2007's $1.6bn.

Q4 2007, though, was a record-breaker in many respects, as the table, below, shows.

The financial picture looks rosy if Intel, as we suspect, can launch Nehalem - slated for release later this year - on time.

We wait with bated breath to see AMD's Q1 earnings' report, out tomorrow. Job cuts and an exodus of senior employees have given the Market fears over AMD's longevity, so the numbers will make for intriguing reading and analysis.
