Organisers call for XP to continue to sell indefinitely
Windows Vista is facing an on going struggle against none other than its predecessor, Windows XP.
XP, released in 2001 has proven to be a stable and efficient OS that millions of users are all too familiar with, they see no urgency to move to Microsoft's newer offering.
On June 30th 2008 however, Microsoft will help bring the XP bandwagon to an end by ceasing all OEM and shrink-wrapped sales of the OS, a move which has sparked an online petition.
The petition, titled Save XP and organised by InfoWorld, had already racked up 41,185 signatures some three days ago. We expect that figure to now be closer, if not more, than 50,000. With 160 days to go until the Windows XP deadline, we're sure the Save XP petition will gather hundreds of thousands of signatures, but will it have any impact?
The Save XP petition is in place to ask Microsoft to abandon all plans to stop OEM sales of Windows XP and rather ambitiously, asks that Microsoft "keep it available indefinitely". We can't quite see it happening.
Microsoft had previously extended the Windows XP deadline to June 30th, and with Windows Vista's Service Pack 1 on the horizon, Microsoft will be quietly hopeful that its popular Windows XP will finally give way to its successor.
If, like approximately 50,000 others, you don't wish to say goodbye to Windows XP, you can sign the petition at SaveXP.com.
