Dell PCs coming to a Dixons, Currys or PC World near you

Continuing its trend of overhauling its retail strategy with CEO Michael Dell at the helm, Dell has announced its imminent plans to make Dell desktop and notebook PCs available from DSGi stores throughout the UK and Europe.

As of January 2008, Currys, Dixons and PC World will all retail Dell systems. In Europe, Electro World, PC City, and Elkjop, also part of the DSGi group, will help extend availability throughout the UK, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Greece, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland.

John Browett, Chief Executive of DSGi said: Customers are at the heart of what we do and we must offer our customers an unbeatable combination of value, choice and service. By adding Dell computers to our ranges, we can give customers in our 1300 stores across Europe another highly sought-after range of products and the experience to match it.

Mark Ormerod, Vice President and General Manager, Consumer business for Dells EMEA operations comments, This partnership with DSGi means that consumers in nearly all major European countries can purchase Dell products through these stores. To maximise choice, Dell is offering a full portfolio of our award-winning products from our high-end gaming systems, to notebooks and desktops that are perfect for everyday computing. With this agreement, consumers in Europe will have more choice than ever before, and experience the look and feel of our products before purchasing.

Over the past year, Dell has announced deals with Best Buy and Staples in the USA, Carrefour Group in Europe and a host of Asian retail outlets in an effort to reverse its economic decline. Following the addition of DSGi to its arsenal, Dell claims availability of its systems in 10,000 outlets across the globe. Is this won't help ship systems, I don't know what will.

DSGi itself has recently dropped out of the FTSE 100 and will hope this deal is the first step to reclaiming a FTSE 100 spot in 2008.

In other possibly not-so-good news, DSGi state that its "unique TechGuys services in the UK will be extended across the new Dell products, providing full IT customer service availability including telephone support, installation and set-up."

sigh, not a good move, imo, the cost of shipping the dell systems to the store's will ramp up the cost in general…

and the tech suport at my local currys is pants tbh, you'd get better tech support from an amoeba, taking into acount it cant talk, or do anything….

mindya, more pc's for the general masses cant be that bad'a thing, and dell's are better made than some *cough* acer, HP, Compaq */cough*
This cant be a good thing.
Time will tell I guess.

I see this from both perspectives though. I've always thought that with Dell being an online retailer only, it'll lead to cheaper systems for the consumer.

However, my partner's parents are after a new laptop and they just don't feel comfortable buying online. They want to get one from a store so they can go in and get peace of mind when they need it. Sometimes hard to believe at times but there are still so many people who have that as a requirement, and rightfully so.

I do think it'll be a good thing to see Dell systems come to the likes of PC World, I wonder if we'll see different pricing options for high street and online equivalents of the same system?
