Thanks to a new report published by The Wall Street Journal, citing insider sources, we have a pretty good idea of the feature uplifts coming to the Samsung Galaxy S7. Just like with the Galaxy S6 launch there will be more than one version of the next flagship; expect at least a curved Galaxy S7 Edge to accompany the regular Galaxy S7.
For clarity I have bullet pointed the key new technologies coming to the Galaxy S7 flagship smartphone(s):
- A pressure sensitive screen: this will be accompanied by 'force touch' UI style niceties, of course.
- USB Type-C: convenient orientation, fast charging (a full day charge in 30 mins) and speedy data transfer capable next gen connector.
- Improved camera sensor for the common challenge of low light photography (probably the BRITECELL). There won't be a camera bump or bulge say the sources.
- The non-curved screen Galaxy S7 smartphone(s) will have microSD expandability.
- A retina scanner might appear too.
- The design of the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge won't be a long way away from the S6 family.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge
Last time around Samsung misread the potential demand for the curved screen version of its flagship, the Galaxy S6 Edge. It could have sold a lot more of these more expensive smartphone variants but missed the opportunity to do so. That mistake won't be repeated, says the WSJ.
Another smart business decision is to make the Galaxy S7 smartphones more immediately available after unveiling, an event expected at the MWC 2016. Last year there was a six week delay between the publicity buzz and eventual product availability. This year a mid-March product release will capitalise on the media excitement.
Overall it sounds like a worthy update to Samsung's flagship. It will also be interesting to see if MWC 2016 (or CES 2016) brings along any more innovative designs from Samsung using its impressive flexible screen and flexible battery technologies, such as Project Valley.
