HTC One M9 smartphone to be launched on 1st March

Mobile device maker HTC has officially announced the launch date of the 'new HTC One'. The new flagship smartphone, commonly referred to as the 'HTC One M9' or 'HTC Hima' by the tech press, will be revealed on 1st March, according to a posting on the HTC UK official Twitter account.

HTC had already confirmed a press event at 4pm CET on Sunday 1st March in Barcelona, just ahead of the MWC 2015. We saw an invite circulating for a 'Utopia in progress' event, subtitled 'join us to see what's next'. Bloomberg's sources tipped that a new HTC One would be the star of the show. We also expect some other handsets, tablets and possibly a wearable to be revealed by the Taiwanese firm.

Guestimates concerning the hardware that will be incorporated inside the new HTC One include the following:

  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octa-core
  • Display: 5-inch 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • Cameras: 20.7-megapixel rear camera, 4-megapixel HTC UltraPixel front camera
  • Sound: Dolby 5.1 audio technology
  • OS/UI: HTC’s latest Sense 7 user interface with improved location-based services
  • Construction: gold, gray and silver options

Looking at designs, French leaksters nowhereelse.fr say that the pictures below are photos of a shell from the upcoming HTC flagship. The "let them stare" Twitter tease suggests that the new HTC One will perhaps be eye-catchingly attractive, I'm not sure that the photos below are evidence of that though. Alternatively the strapline could allude to some other visual/imaging qualities that the smartphone offers such as exceptional low light photography.

It definitely looks like we will be flooded with smartphone news in a fortnight's time. Which upcoming handsets are readers most looking forward to?

Yes! Hopefully EE will have them available pretty fast, time to call them and book my upgrade!

I'm most looking forward to seeing what progress project ara has made, not that I use a mobile anymore but the concept is very interesting.

Pretty much sums up what high end smartphones are all about, waving your penis in public since a £100 smartphone can do more than anyone possibly needs.

I know it's not good to pigeon hole yourself and commit before you've had a chance to evaluate something *cough* Pre-odering *cough* but I was so happy with my HTC One M7, and remain to be even with its flaws, I knew that in 2 years time I'd probably be looking at the HTC One family for my new phone.

And this looks to be true still. It looks well made and like it will feel premium ( which a smartphone should, you spend £500+ on a device and you will hold it in your hand for at least 2 years after all ! ). It's specs seem as up to date as is possible and I'm hoping they've made progress with the audio (not that's it bad but in 2 years you would hope some progress had been made!) as it was my favourite part of the phone.

I also hope there is the HTC M9+ ( or whatever they are going to call it ) as that would probably be the one I would choose.

You can probably make the same argument against people with CrossFire/SLi setups and any kind of processor overclocking too.

Personally, I buy into the high end smartphone, not because of any desire to “tackle wave” but more because those high-end devices tend to be powerful enough to last a couple of years. Typically I replace on a 3 year cycle. Something I'm not sure I could do if I went for a low end Samsung, (and needless to say iPhones wouldn't get a look in at that £100 price point), although the 600 series Lumias are actually pretty impressive.

Not that bothered by the M9, (although some wag suggested that “if you want to see what the iPhone7 will look like, get a pic of the M9”), because of the non-replaceable battery and the rumours that it'd be without SD card expansion.
