CEO Steve Ballmer following his nose

Microsoft's Surface has always impressed, just about everyone who uses one, correction, just about everyone who sees it on YouTube, wants one. It really is one of the coolest upcoming gadgets.

The trouble with it is, when will it ever surface? Excuse the pun. Microsoft originally promised that businesses such as casinos and hotels would get their hands on Surface products late last year. Those businesses however are still waiting.

In terms of the home user, Microsoft's Surface seems like something in the far too distant future. Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, however has other plans. Having originally outlined a time line of approximately five years before Surface became available to the home user, Ballmer now states that large amounts of demand has called for action.

"We're going to follow our nose", says Ballmer. Indicating that Microsoft hopes to bring Surface to our homes much sooner. We still wouldn't expect to buy one anytime this year, and probably not the next either. I can't help but want one though, come on Steve, make it happen.

I guess we need to get cheap touchscreens - maybe with OLEDs being thinnner they can bolt the additional tech on the front and be about as thick as panels as we have now? :)
I seem to remember it uses cameras rather than a touchscreen if you see what I mean. The neat thing wasn't the touch capability but more the object recognition.
Dangel's right. It has a projector inside it to project the image onto the table and five cameras inside that record anything that touches the surface.
