The setup

Now to set up this lovely new hardware.

Setup is pretty easy, so I'm not going to go through it step-by-step because there isn't much need. It really is straightforward - and, anyway, trying to take decent photos of an LCD screen is a pain!

You need to set up the controller first - the receiver is headless so it would be a little difficult to set up manually.

Officially, to use a receiver at all you need a controller - you can't even (officially) set one up without it. However, there is a plugin being written for SqueezeCenter that will allow you to manually enter your wireless settings and send them to the receiver.

Once the controller is set up, it creates an ad-hoc network between itself and the receiver, transfers the settings, kills the ad-hoc network and then controls the receiver over your wireless network through SqueezeServer. It all works pretty flawlessly as far as I can tell.

You will be prompted to update the controller firmware - there have been some massive changes recently. Wireless performance is much improved, power consumption considerably less and performance way ahead of what it was when I last used it.

I'm planning to replace the SB3 in my living room with this, so it forces me to use the controller and SC7. I'll post more about how it works as time goes on.

Autopilot has also been in the beta group and has been using his setup far more than I have over the past few weeks, so I’m by no means the expert on this.

Funkstar promises further additions to this article. In the mean time, feel free to put your Squeezebox Duet questions to him over in the HEXUS community forums.
