Have you ever been checking a Google Docs document or spreadsheet on a mobile device and just wished that you could change that glaring mistake?  Soon you'll finally be able to, as Google has announced that it will be enabling editing of documents from certain mobile platforms.

The announcement came out of the company's Atmosphere cloud-computing conference being held this week in Paris.  According to the search-giant's official blog, the service will be rolled out to Android devices and the iPad in "the next few weeks" and will even allow collaborative editing across multiple different devices.

As with the current service, the new features will be accessible through a browser rather than relying on a specific app.

Bizarrely, the announcement only mentions Apple's tablet and not iOS devices generally.  We can't see any practical reasons why the features couldn't be brought to the iPhone and iPod Touch, but Google presumably has some technical limitations to overcome.

In addition, the company announced a new two-step verification process to add further security to Google Apps.  As well as a password, administrators will be able to force users to enter a single-use code sent to their mobile phone.  The new system is available to the Premier, Education and Government editions of Google Apps and will be rolled-out to the Standard Edition and regular Google users in the coming months.

Even though these sorts of devices are designed primarily for consumption rather than creation, we can see both of these new features being very welcome additions for busy Googlers on the go.

Always been a fan of Google Docs although didn't find that much of a use for it. Glad to hear of this regardless.
