Moore to come

So, what do we make of all this? Good question. Until we get some end product to play with this is just another PowerPoint presentation. Furthermore, ARM still hasn't persuaded Microsoft to write a version of the full Windows operating system that is compatible with the ARM instruction set, and that will remain a stumbling block for many users.

However, on paper at least, ARM does look to be taking the fight to Intel. The chip giant will be unveiling more information about its SoC evolution of Atom - Moorestown - which it claims can be used in smartphones, at IDF (Intel Developer's Conference) next week. And we sincerely doubt the timing of this ARM announcement is a coincidence.

It doesn't look like we'll have to wait too long to see these implementations in action either. Schorn reckons we'll be seeing ARM ecosystem products containing Cortex A9 designs in the first half of 2009 and then Osprey related silicon to appear later that year.

Intel is bound to have a strong counter-offering at IDF and, knowing ARM, we wouldn't be surprised if we were speaking to one of its execs again in a couple of weeks, when the dust has settled. In the mean-time, we'll leave you with this slide, showing which chip makers are already developing silicon with Cortex A9 inside. What no Qualcomm?
