Fairly much on the mark for me - good stuff ;)
A mate of mine just pointed out that if Steve Jobs responded directly to that article it'd be “Steve vs. Steve - The showdown”. I'd win, hands down!
Oh, and if you like it please
Digg it to share it with the world :)
Apple marketing pure and simple. (but good translation)
How presumptious of you to think that your febrile rant can possibly comprehend the vast and immutable genuis of our commander-in-c(t)hief, Steve Jobs.
His business acumen is beyond reproach, and no-one should be allowed to question the motives of the Great One. Was it not for one super-man's vision, you'd have no virtual global monopoly on portable music players, and, would you scarcely believe, no blatent price-fixing between different iTunes markets. How could we, the proletariat, allow the Great One to not indulge in, what some might think are, mild forms of extortion is beyond me.
Let's not forget that the iPhone is a work of monumental genius, and it should be compared to the Mona Lisa, at the very, very least. All you have to do is bow down and stare in wonder at such a technological marvel and be thankful that it was unleashed in your lifetime, Steve K!

What, not the Newton?
schmunk
What, not the Newton?
..and what about the mighty mouse? A pinacle of engineering that.
Seems as though Apple and AT&T may have to sort out a few snags with the Iphone's itemised billing too - just search Google for ‘Iphone big bills’ …….:)
You missed the fact that
Jagdish Rebello of iSuppli
predicted the iPhone price-cut
in January. All the crybabies whining about the price-cut just hadn't bothered to read around before buying one.
Obviously Apple fed the iPhone hype, they had a product to sell. But the nutters who queued up for a product that was in plentiful supply were generating an RDF all of their own. If people were working themselves into a frenzy over the opportunity to throw a lot of money at me I might roll my eyes, but I'd have nets up to catch the cash, and so would you.
Frankly, if you were willing to spend $600 on it, then that is what the device is worth to you…
I just think it's hilarious how all the early adopters on MacRumors.com complained like no tommorow (the price cut forum thread got 51 pages of replies within 24 hours) and then when Mr Jobs gave them a hundred bucks back, they all went down on one knee and proclaimed his greatness..
Steve,
Are you being highly cynical? Yup.
Bitter and twisted? Maybe.
But are you right on the money? Oh, yes!
Splendid stuff!

Splendid stuff!
Errr… not so much.
I read an apt analysis on another forum:
For most companies, people get upset when they put their prices up. For Apple, people get upset when they put their prices down. Jobs may be egomaniacal and self-absorbed (Cringley has an interesting little tale to tell on his page about that), but the mania surrounding Apple products has taken on a life of its own and is the true cause of this nonsense. Blaming a CEO for daring to
make money for his shareholders is bizarre in the extreme and makes me wonder if Hexus hasn't got a bit too close to the RDF.
Not really, because he devalued the item by a 3rd. In two months.
Even the latest graphics card don't degrade like that. Whats good for a companies short term, might not benefit the consumer / religious zelot fan base, or even the companies long term prospects.
I think the point is that users will be upset, early adopters except they will get screwed a little bit, but not that much.
For instnace the PS3 i bought on launch day, knowing they wouldn't sell out (price to high imo) but they gave us goodies, free/discounted games online etc. Now the bundle price cut dosen't leave me fealing quite so bitter, as i had months of use, and some perks that the late comers don't get.
The real error with Apple's new iPod line has nothing to do with price-drops, it's the way they've threatened the whole iPod ecosystem.
The new iPods won't feed out video in the way that the old ones did. While there is some excuse for Apple's redesign of the four-connector headphone system (since the extra contact is now needed for the iPhone's mic input), this affects systems that used the dock connector as well. I'm sure a lot of people have invested in some fairly fancy (and costly) 3rd-party iPod video solutions that will be broken by this change. (There was a hint in the new specs - the iPod classic now outputs 480p, and that's not a standard composite signal.)
Widespread 3rd-party support is a critical part of any market-dominant system. Purposefully breaking that is just stupid.
BTW, I liked Apple's press release today - 1 million suckers bought the iPhone while it was selling at a 50% profit margin, and they were happy to do so. Anyone want to lay odds on how many MBA theses will use this as an example of perfect marketing in the next few years?
(Oh, another BTW, this is not the first time Apple has dumped the price on a product, Aperture 1.0 had a similar massive price-drop and early-adopter recompense.)
What I'm really looking forward to?
The UK price.
Steve

What, for the comedy value? The justification from Apple alone for the conversion rate should be most amusing..
Priceless and bang on the money; I suppose I've always had an aversion to the Jobs RDF (no, I don't have an ipod, I have a Sandisk Sansa and love it), and for me, this has echoes of the spin that Sony tried to put on the Euro PS3 debacle.
charleski,
As always, you walk your own path and your comments are insightful and informative.
