Not had a mobile since 2012 for security reasons and to be honest I'm happier without it. If I were to get another it'd be one of the motorola modular phones that have been delayed, being modular means they are less of a security risk after some careful mods.

I've only had the current one since 2007, so I'm not ready for an upgrade yet.

When I do, it'll almost certainly be more of the same, or as close to it as is still available, unless someone manages to convince me I need a smartphone, ‘cos every time I get tempted and look into it, I end up reinforcing the reasons why I still don’t have one.

If something goes on the market that does what I want AND, critically, has pretty much bullet-proof security and privacy features, I'm interested. I'm not holding my breath.

Currently own an S4, wanted an S6 but when I saw the specs I started to hesitate. Looking at the ridiculous UK market prices, I think I am going to wait for Xiaomi Mi 5.
ps. OnePlus2 is **** with its under-clocked 810.

I have an Xperia Z2 which I absolutely love and does everything I want of it, but my employer pays my monthly phone bill. So this means in effect I get a phone for free, it makes no sense for me to stick with this contract once it's up in around April / May.

I'll see what is out around then, but it won't be the Z5 as I have no desire for a 4k mobile screen which will just eat through it's battery.

That's only on the premium, the normal and compact are 1080p iirc.

Honestly for me I'm in no rush to change my phone but if I do I'll likely give Windows a go once I've checked out all the t&c's properly, can't really be any worse than Android though. How I miss symbian on my p900i :(

Just bought 3 Samsung A5 last night via uswitch with 1000 mins, 5000 texts and 2 GB 3g data which is more free now because of 4g customers @ £45 a month for all 3 phones. Bargain at £15 a month for each phone.

Currently using a SIM-free LG G3, the G4 isn't a big enough step up, but if I'm flush next year (unlikely) then perhaps a G5 might be in my future.

What I'd really like though is an Ara phone - the idea of being able to tailor to fit what I need is appealing. If not one of those then Motorola would be in with a shout, failing that then Lumia's look interesting, but I've too much invested in Android apps to consider that seriously at the moment. I tend to run my phones until they stop doing what I need then change - never been one of those “I need this years model” folks.

No iPhone? Correct, although I can undoubtedly see the attraction, they're just not for me - I prefer to not have to jump through hoops to get what I need to do done. Plus Apple's “my way or the highway” attitude doesn't work for me. But if you've got an iPhone and it's suiting you then I'm pleased.

Actually, are there any genuinely bad phones out there these days (new)? I'm getting the vibe that they're all pretty decent these days and final choice comes down to whatever might suit you better than the other models. Just fractional points.

I think I'll get a Note 3 or Note 4 - I've owned Note 10.1 for almost three years and I really like those S Pen (and other) features. These phones are still rocking and are a whole lot cheaper than new models. Or maybe I'll get some Lumia, I've been thinking about it for a while.

I am looking to upgrade to one of the older mobiles.
HTC ONE M8
OR
LG G2 Flex
OR
Galaxy A5

Motorola Moto G is overhyped. The missus has one and it's heavier than the S2 and the back is uneven. Taking off the back cover is also a challenge. The 1GB RAM doesn't help either :yucky:

Currently using an Xperia Z2, and I'm very happy with it. The improvements of newer devices have so far failed to impress me enough to replace it. I'll probably keep it as long as it's still usable, and replace it with an Xperia Z6 (or later) or a Project Ara phone.

As was said by someone else, the regular Z5 is 1080x1920. Only the 5.5" Z5 Premium is UHD. If I were you, I'd wait another 6 months for the inevitably Snapdragon 820-powered Z6, though. Even though newer 810s are better than early runs, they're still power hogs.

The only thing I'd want more from my Galaxy S3 is more memory, and LTE. Everything other improvement (processor speed, camera quality, etc.) would be a welcome bonus but not strictly necessary.
What I will not absolutely not compromise on, is the microSD card. And I will only relent on the removable battery if the battery life is decent (last a full day, that is, 18+ hours according to my typical usage pattern) AND the phone is waterproof. MicroSD and removable battery were the main reason I decided to give the S3, and by association, Android a chance and now that Samsung turned their back on those, my next phone will likely be an LG assuming they don't follow Samsung / the rest of the market. If they do also forsake those of us wanting those features, I will either get an S5 or G4 OR use that as a reason to either try something new (look at Windows phones) or revisit the iPhone. It has been a long, long time.

Both you and LSG501 are correct of course, I should have also mentioned I have no interest in an 810 snapdragon either with the 820 around the corner.

A nice 820 equipped Z6 would be right up my street, as long as it kept the micro-SD slot and a decent (3000mah+) battery.

Microsoft 940XL when its released as long as its not too much - otherwise I'll be buying a 640xl….
Posted by Saist - Sat 05 Sep 2015 06:54
As of right now if I was buying within the next 2 months… I'd go for a Sony Z5 or Z5 Premium. I've had a Z1S. It was absolutely brilliant; surviving day to day work that destroyed Samung and Apple phones. I jumped to a Z3; which hasn't been quite as brilliant. The first one died on me within a month… the first refurb I got from T-Mobile had dead pixels… but the third phone has been as solid as the Z1S… although I must say I'm still a little sore in the rear that I got “New To You” phones from T-Mobile's warranty program rather than “Factory New” phones.

That being said; the Z5 and Z5P does have some attributes that concern me. I'm not entirely convinced the Qualcomm 810 is actually up to the task of driving an actual 4k UHD resolution screen. Not to mention the 810 has already earned it's reputation as a throttle-hungry thermally-volatile mobile chipset. Then there is the further issue that the 810 tops out at USB 3.0… so no USB Type C connector with DisplayPort capability that USB 3.1 brings. Granted, it's not like Sony had a lot of other options to pick from. While they could have used either an Nvidia or Intel chipset and had the USB 3.1 feature set… Qualcomm was probably giving Sony a huge price break on 810 chips; probably lower than Nvidia or Intel would have offered. And it's not like Sony's better build quality; and just plain better phones; have been flying off store shelves. For whatever reason the popular market is infatuated with Samsung or Apple…

I still have a HTC Windows phone 8X which i use for work and also a Microsoft 640XL which is used as a more general purpose device.
Should Microsoft bring out a flagship windows phone of the size of the old 1520 / current 640XL then i would move on the HTC and upgrade … possibly.
The proviso is that it (flagship) needs to be 1920 x 1080 minimum, increased fixed storage (Windows phones always seem to have puny fixed storage), retain the micro SD slot and remain reasonably priced.
The 640XL is a very good device however a premium model at say £100 more would see me upgrade.
Outside of Windows i would pick an Android phone as second choice though premium phablet ones do seem rather expensive from any manufacturer.
Lastly would be iPhone 6+. Its the first Apple phone i have actually liked the look of where the display does not feel to small and everything is crammed in. It is though way to expensive and i just do not like the Apple ecosystem or the nannying way they go about things.

I've got a 1st gen Moto G. When it dies (or the next android slows it down like the latest one did) then I might upgrade to latest Moto G. I've got plenty of other things I'd rather spend £500+ on than a phone

I've had a Galaxy S3 since launch, and see no reason to replace until it breaks.

Any replacement would benefit from 4G, but I'm rarely without Wi-Fi so it's not something that important.

If my phone were to break today I'd just see what deals were available - not much to choose between Sony/Samsung/LG.

I am quite looking forward to seeing x86 Windows 10 phones, the idea of plugging your phone into a monitor to charge, and using it as a basic PC is interesting, but it would only be a decisive factor in choosing a phone if all other factors were equal.

Probably the Wiley fox swift if it's comparable to the moto G. The budget phones truly do all you need them to and if the camera is decent on this one then it's all the boxes ticked for me. Not interested in the status symbols attached to prestige flagship handsets these days. Just need something that works well and lasts at least a full day per charge!

Currently don't see myself upgrading for a while, LG G3 is doing everything I need. I only spent so much in the first place because I ended up getting a refund on my failed Moto G and had the spare money for a more powerful phone at the time, the Moto G pretty much fulfilled my needs, so I can't see the G3 failing to any time soon.

Those Wileyfox phones that got an article here on Hexus seem very appealing as a Moto G alternative, if they had been out at the time I might have gone for those instead of the G3. Though considering the failure my Moto G had, shook my confidence in the budget phone build quality a little.

Currently have a Z1 compact, trying to find an alternative with my next phone as Sony have been atrocious to me with their repair job, couldn't really have been worse if they tried. Sadly doesn't seem to be much else in the compact phone market that doesn't compromise so I'm probably stuck for now.

It is really less about the phone and more about the infrastructure that goes with it, Apple, Google or Microsoft.

Having just bought a Motoroal G (second gen) which as a device a great, and after a great deal of faffing, finally working more or less as I want, but the core (for me) applications that came with it (text aand e mail) were pretty dire. But it was relatively cheap and good enough for the moment.

But having just bought it it, and with a usual upgrade period of about 7 years, I guess (and it is only a guess, because 7 years is a long time in this business, I'll probably be looking at an iPhone 10 or 11.

Different set of issues, different set of responses to the issues. Mobile phones can give away data that the internet can't …. and vice-versa. It also depends what you do with each, what (if any) apps you have running/use, what you use the internet for, etc.

For instance, I encrypt any emails containing anything at all sensitive, and have for, oh, 20 years or so. My internet-connected computers don't have access to my sensitive PC data, at all.

Mine will be the 2015 version of the Nexus5 to replace/upgrade from my current 2013 Nexus5 handset. As its better to have the option to unlock the bootloader built into the devices design in the 1st place, instead of having to use an exploit/hack to unlock / root my phone. So I can install a custom rom without the bloatware almost all phones come with.

Still got my trusty Nexus 4, has had a new battery and replacement back but otherwise she' still running like a dream.

The Moto X play is tempting but I've not really seen any phone actually worth upgrading too. If it breaks I'll look at the WileyFox phones and the new nexi and make my decision based on reviews and budgetary constraints.
Posted by deejayburnout - Sun 06 Sep 2015 23:17
Each phone nowadays has a little jump in spec than the last model in its gen. My note 3 performs as good as my wifes note 4 and only the camera and screen is better( it does have a fingerprint scanner that she doesn't use) It has dreadful battery life due to the touchwiz bloat and that QUad HD screen that is barely noticeable. And the note 5 is a little better than the note 4 but its not worth the incremental upgrade. The only real reason i want a new phone is the Moto x style has front facing speakers and the option for micro SD. To be honest, i could stick with my note 3 until it breaks.

I'm definitely looking to go sim only when this contract is up, it just costs far too much now.
I'm tired of the junk they're all peddling, minor upgrades just to call it new mostly. Don't want apple or Samsung for sure next time and not interested in windows. I'm actually pretty tempted by some of these grey market phones.
Although my contract isn't up for another 7 months, so I'll probably say something totally different by then! :)

Just replaced my aging S3 with the new Moto X Play. Its gotten mixed reviews, but getting away from Samsungs awfully bloated UI was a must. Plus I got it for a solid £200 which was my max budget. Yes its Soc is old, but frankly, when iphones and most Windows phones run on 1GB of RAM and are far smoother than my hunk-a-junk S3, I question the validity of a Jeremy Clarkson'esq ‘MOAR POWAAAAA’ that all the manufacturers seem to be peddling.

I tested out a Huawei Ascend P7 and its pretty clean with some cute little additions to the Android UI through its EMUI. I was impressed with it and its build quality and I think its deservedly building up a good rep. It does however, have woeful update schedules. Its still running 4.4.2 and only some of the EU regions have just been updated to 5.1! Its XDA subforums are quite quiet compared to the other sections.

I bought my first smart-phone in Q2 of 2013, a Samsung Galaxy S4. It was as far as I am concerned the first worthy smart-phone that did everything I expected of it. It still does everything and both subsequent SG-Sn upgrades are almost the same (no substantial improvements). I am unlikely to purchase a new phone until new battery technology that multiplies the charge duration over standardised operation is quintupled as a minimum requirement. The only other avenues for improvement are wireless charging (for more fluid usage behaviour), and an improved sound system.

I concur with this - I really want a 4.3“ phone, no bigger. Been using a Moto E for the last year, which replaced a Motorola Razr I - great phones for this price range, but with the Moto E 2nd Gen going 4.5”, it's harder and harder to find something that'll last.

So I've just bought an Alcatel Pixi 3.5 instead.

The Play has a huge battery, so it should be good. Bigger than the Style, which seems odd, as the Style has more pixels to push around…

Got an LG G2 and it still does (almost) everything I want. Screen falling off but I patched it up and I also replaced the battery for new (meticulously following a youtube guide!) to bring the staying power up to new. I love the 1080p resolution and QHD is overkill for me. Honestly, battery life hasn't even improved over my G2 for newer phones and this insane resolution war must have had a part in it.

Still, prolly the new Nexus 5 if I had to, assuming Google could bring the pricing back to the ‘superb value-for-money’ model. New phone MUST have Qi charging. That alone rules out all Moto and OnePlus phones, which is a crying shame (and I don't like Samsung). C'mon guys, where's the wireless charging in all these new phones? It's 2015 and the coil can only add cents on to the build cost….

Oh, and GPS that actually works, like, y'know, ALL THE TIME. Building the GPS antennas into removable back covers has caused me endless headaches as the connection, based merely on touch, is always dodgy. Being late or lost on important occasions because of my phone's inability to lock on is infuriating in this day and age when my dad's TomTom will work all the time. New USB-C would be sexy. And AC wireless of course.

Apart from that, it's battery life all the way…. and my G2 is still ok there…
