What's all this Gen4 nonsense?
This is Nintendo's 6th gen by my count.

I'm not surprised really, everything about it seems mediocre. Especially the games line up but importantly, so are the system specs. It's comparable to current gen systems and it will be left behind by the Xbox and Playstation when they come out.

Developers of “Core” (euuuuugh) games, will leave this thing behind. Especially now considering hardly anyone has one.

wow, those are pretty scary numbers. Trouble is I don't expect the upcoming next Gen consoles to be that far ahead to warrant must buy status for many.

difficult times ahead, for most people current gen are good enough. If there are no killer games then they will flop. Look at PS Vita, no real killer games and no-one talks about it. Too many systems, choices and with less money about people are sticking to one format, which to my mind appears to be there smartphone increasingly…

No gamez.

Vita price-cut inbound in the 28th for both models. The U also sold less games than the Vita last month in the UK and US.

I'm sorry but why has the biggest issue not even been raised in the article?….

What-the-hell is up with that guy's hat in the first image?…

Lol, I was looking at the picture wondering that myself when I first read the article.

Does anyone else think the first image with the Wii U and Power Glove is a bit ironic?

Can't say I'm surprised at all. Its just not got the WOW factor it needs to make an impact. I can see them retreating to making games or concentrating on the hand held market. Problem is the hand held market is being squeezed by mobiles phones so they are in for a very bumpy ride IMHO.

I don't like mario games all that much, and that's all the Wii franchise seems good for. All other games are multi platform so would play better on an Xbox or PS3.

After the novelty period wore off I was shocked at how lacking the console really is. Simply, its a Wii with a 5 year old GPU / CPU combo and a gameboy as a controller.

I am sure Xbox will allow windows phones / tablets to interact with them next gen, same with the vita and ps3.

Sorry Nintendo, the technology is just not good enough for that price.

Only games i'd want on the Wii U are lego city (love the lego games…) and the new zelda. £300 (who wants a base model) is a silly amount of cash to play two games. Drop it to £200 and maybe I might risk it.

This “Gen-4” nonsense is doing my head in too, it's only Sony on Generation 4 this round.

Microsoft is on Gen 3 (Xbox, 360, ???),
Sony is on Gen 4 (PS, PS2, PS3, PS4)*,
Nintendo is on Gen 6 (NES, SNES, N64, GC, Wii, Wii-U)*
Sega should be on Gen 5 (MS, MD (inc 32x and Mega-CD), Saturn, DC)**

*Not including Portable systems
** Included ‘cos I didn’t like to leave Sega out…

Gen 4 : 4th gen of 3D.

Yeah the whole gen thing is pretty misleading, as is comparing machines based on how powerful their CPU is.

A good product at the right price will sell, if Wii U hardware is cheaper and it has enjoyable games/apps ship at the right price then it won't matter to the average consumer that the graphics are more basic. Wii hasn't really been aimed at hardcore gamers and neither is the U, Nintendo would like it to be a family friendly entertainment hub.

Problem Nintendo have is that their core markets (handheld and casual) are being taken over by smartphones and tablets (it's much the same problem with the Vita as well). If you're into things other than “games” like Wii-Fit you've probably already got one and a new U isn't going to benefit you, likewise if you just want a party laugh with friends then an old Wii doesn't need upgrading…

There are no killer apps, nothing that says “my life needs a Wii-U or Vita” and I doubt they are going to find one that will really shift that many consoles. Smartphones and tablets are killing them, as the capabilities increase Nintendo and Sony are going find the going even tougher.

Xbox and Playstation appeal to a more focussed gamer crowd who will care more about graphics, the controller ergonomics, the online play etc but I can see their market also being eroded as tablets/smartphones become more capable (for example wireless display and controllers with some sort of dock would make them effective consoles), they've probably got another strong generation in them though purely based on CPU/GPU power for the more complex games.

I think that they think that we think the clock was reset at PS2 / Xbox / Gamecube

In which case we'd be approaching gen 3.

Sorry, but the name is stupid too. WiiU?
SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System)
DS (Dual Screen)
GameCube
GameBoy
N64
They all meant something. Wii and WiiU are just embarrassing names to say and don't mean anything. Nint were trying to be hip/cool and they failed.

What could possibly be embarrassing about declaring “I like playing with my Wii, especially with my girlfriend, she prefers to lay on the floor but I get excited and stand up during the climax of the game”

I actually really like the console, despite everything. Wii U needs more games and a system update or two. We've seen a few lock ups that needed a reset - but overall it's an enjoyable toy to play with. The dual screen really can be handy for multiplayer games. The graphics are pretty tight too. The community drawings are excellent and add more interaction than XBLIVE.

I'd also like to add; the NetFront NX v2.1 browser is the fastest I've used since the dawn of the interweb!
