Well I only joined them last month so no :p

The thing is it could have happened to any network its fixed now and will hopefully be ok.

Plus I have a great package with unlimited calls and texts for 36 quid so much better than the orange deal i was on

They're good on a whole so no. Eeach network has problems of some sort. Just that this seemed to be a big one. Hopefully an isolated incident, thought it didnt affect me really.

Ditched O2 for Vodafone years back and wouldn't fancy to come back. Mind you, Vodafone network isn't a pretty picture either. I have had number of issues with them and being PAYG customer I sometimes feel ignored. But hey, what else is there besides (Ireland) Meteor, 3G and Tesco that just don't have good enough coverage and most people I know are O2 or Vodafone.
So no, if I was O2 for incident like this I would not ditch them. If you look around and more importantly try around most networks are some half ass money machines.

Tesco is a virtual provider who use O2's network.

Anyway, I'm not with them, but no I don't see why a 24h downtime would turn me away by itself; without knowing exactly what the problem was, it could potentially happen to any network. People taking the Mickey, claiming compensation for anything and everything are part of the reason we have pages of T+Cs, complicated get-out clauses, etc affecting everyone else. Fair enough waiving the charge for the time of the outage though.

Again, not much is known about the problem, but from what I do know, they handled it well giving me more confidence in them if anything…

Recently went over to Giff Gaff so no, won't be ditching O2 network. Seems to be the 2nd outage in as many months but these things happen and could've been any of them. I try to look at it as they've now fixed a serious problem that could be waiting to happen to the others….. lol, I know… gets me through the day anyhoo :)

Moved to them via Giffgaff last month. I found a noticeable drop in signal from Orange/t-Mob…24 hours is not a problem as long as it doesn't happen again. The poor quality signal in general is more of a problem imo.
Posted by Philipp - Fri 13 Jul 2012 16:59
Didn't even cross my mind to change tbh, its just one of them things and on the grand scheme of things not a very big one.
Posted by pollaxe - Fri 13 Jul 2012 17:00
I'm going to file it as one of those things.. I'm a GiffGaff user and have been for a while (there have been a few cock-ups with them, recently too) and as I'm also a NatWest user, I'm just waiting for outage number three on something technical! :D
Posted by TheVoice - Fri 13 Jul 2012 17:06
Yes, but not because of this. Their infrastructure in the town where I work (High Wycombe) is shockingly unreliable. I've been with O2 since May last year and I've lost count of the amount of times I've completely lost 3G/HSDPA access while at work, usually for days/weeks at a time. This week's outage didn't really affect me because my 3G signal has been down all week anyway.

Means I'll probably find a new home broadband provider too, I'm only with them because I get a discount for being a mobile customer.

Andehh
24 hours is not a problem

Did seem a massive problem to all those people who were ranting.

'My wife was stuck outside the hospital in the run because she couldn't call me for a lift…'

Guess his wife never heard of a land line or pay phone…..

'I couldn't text my sister Happy Birthday and she was upset..'

Don't be a such a cheap ****er and send a card next year.

etc etc etc

People are pathetic when mobile devices don't work. World comes to a complete stop……

I'm a giffgaff user too but I didn't notice the outage? Either way these things happen. It was worse during the new years where people couldn't call/text but that's also normal.

I've heard it was 1/3 customers that had the biggest effect.

My phone did lose signal for a bit yesterday but it was nothing major. (GiffGaff)

'fraid the outage just passed me by - low usage on a dumb phone so it was always working when I needed it.
Posted by HalloweenJack - Fri 13 Jul 2012 18:43
wont be changing - they usually do me allright , that and tmob/orange is utterly aweful here - cant get a signal and the reply from them? use the phone in the gardren
Posted by Noxvayl - Fri 13 Jul 2012 19:51
Didn't affect me on GiffGaff, I would of made a plan if I did loose signal though. I doubt it will cause me to move considering I have managed to earn all the airtime I need on GiffGaff for my first 3 months, not going to get better than a provider that pays me to use their service.
Posted by Whiternoise - Fri 13 Jul 2012 20:28
At the very most I would expect the charges for that month to be waived or a free £20 topup if you're on PAYG. Who are you going to run to? It's not like any of the other providers are going to do a better job.
Posted by anselhelm - Fri 13 Jul 2012 20:33
Unless O2 offers me a new contract with unlimited data that rivals the cheaper service from 3 Phones, I was intending to switch soon anyway when I buy a new phone soon. (As far as I know, no single provider actually offers the phone I want on contract, since UK providers seem to hate qwerty Android slider phones.)
Posted by CAT-THE-FIFTH - Fri 13 Jul 2012 20:35
Ditching O2 might be a tad harmful.
Posted by mark22 - Fri 13 Jul 2012 22:30
More than happy with giffgaff and had no outage anyway.
Posted by Brutos - Fri 13 Jul 2012 22:52
I move from T-mobile to giffgaff and wont go back to any monthly paying contracts waste of money.
ANy network engineer and system engineer knows these things happen so i wont switch just for one outage. That this coming from a Senior Voice Network engineer
Posted by KeyboardDemon - Sat 14 Jul 2012 00:08
My wife was caught out by this, she lost all reception while my phone had a better connection to the network than it ever has usually and we are both on O2 so I'm confused about that one.
Posted by watercooled - Sat 14 Jul 2012 00:23
The fault seems to be more of a software thing, affecting specific customers rather than areas. Better signal could be down to less contention/interference.
Posted by simonpreston - Sat 14 Jul 2012 10:21
Another Giffgaff user here. Didn't affect me either tbh.
Would I leave if without the use of phone for 24? No way. The bargain I get for my tenner with no contract far outweighs a hiccup now and then.
Posted by Blademrk - Mon 16 Jul 2012 10:34
I'll probably leave O2 when my contract is up next month, but that's nothing to do with the outage, more to do with the lack of 3G service - my brother is on 3 and the number of places he could get coverage while I couldn't was unbelievable.
Posted by Valinor - Mon 16 Jul 2012 14:06
On GiffGaff, so not planning to switch anytime soon. I just thought the lack of connection was because I was in a remote part of north Cornwall…
Posted by The Hand - Mon 16 Jul 2012 15:12
I didn't encounter any problems on giffgaff/O2, so I'm staying put for the time being. To be honest other networks are just as prone to outages; Vodafone in Feb 2011 for example, had a serious network outage when extremely important and expensive equipment was stolen.
Since the O2 outage, Vodafone (or Vodafone associated dealers) have been constantly ringing me trying to get me to come back to them, but I'm happy with giffgaff, so it's not going to happen.
Posted by markini6 - Tue 17 Jul 2012 17:04
Nope, wasn't affected at all by the outage
Posted by Macman - Sun 22 Jul 2012 00:58
Nah; O2 overall have been good for, good that I don't really need to contact Customer Services lol.

They have text me to give me a 10% off my next bill and £10 or £20 (not sure) off in O2 shop or something.

Why fix something when it's not broken, so to speak?
Posted by razer121 - Sun 22 Jul 2012 09:03
Was on O2 but have always had issues with connection to the network….so i left a few months back. Glad i did XD

Just keep looking on hot uk deals. Some mad deals pop up.

Giffgaff is expensive for what you get.

Uhm… what!? Pay As You Go can't get cheaper and I don't know any contract that gives you unlimited internet for £10 a month. Even if you factor in the cost of a phone on contract GiffGaff's goodybags are cheaper: http://community.giffgaff.com/t5/Blog/iPhone-4S-Price-Comparison-giffgaff-Goodybags-VS-Contract/ba-p/1824247

I get 5000 SMS, 250 mins, 500MB data for £7.50 on contract, which includes a phone. Nothing is unlimited, do a quick search on the giffgaff forums and you'll find people complaining because gg have threatened to or actually barred data use.
