I had heard of RATM but never really heard any of their music, so I'm glad I popped onto Amazon to pay all of 29p to hear a brilliant song which was on repeat for hours last nite.

Only 17 years late but better late than never.

Anything to annoy the wet fish that won the xFactor and wipe the grin off Simons face.
Also im bored of all the lar di da style music that is out every xmas, lets give a real band a chance.

Looking at the official charts website, RAGE is at 80.

Here's an Amazon discussion RE: do they count towards the official charts
http://www.amazon.co.uk/tag/mp3/forum/ref=cm_cd_et_md_pl?_encoding=UTF8&cdMsgNo=24&cdPage=1&cdSort=oldest&cdThread=Tx3U7MN4WDHUQUA&cdMsgID=Mx1V43X5O8FDTWD#Mx1V43X5O8FDTWD

Amazon.co.uk Music Team says:
We can confirm that sales of MP3s from Amazon.co.uk, including “The Climb” by Joe McElderry and “Killing in the Name” by Rage Against The Machine, count towards the Official UK Charts.

Rules PDF
3.0 Singles Definitions Summary

j. (i) Digital Audio Track - Audio download - Minimum £0.40

Edit by Stoo - Amazon buys the tracks from Sony at 40p or more, they then sell at 29p as a loss leader.

Bit of a joke to be honest isn't? Shouldnt matter what it costs…
Posted by mycarsavw - Wed 16 Dec 2009 12:55
I always thought there was another rule about it having to be available on at least two formats but I can't find official confirmation of that.
Posted by neonplanet40 - Wed 16 Dec 2009 12:58
Quote from amazon site

Just to back up what's been said about the 29p downloads counting towards the chart. They DO count, I e-mailed the official chart company to ask and they confirmed that 29p downloads off Amazon count towards the chart. The minimum price of 40p is the DEALER price what Amazon pay, if they decide to sell cheaper as a special offer then it's up to them but it doesn't effect the downloads being counted towards the chart.

Once again, 29p downloads DO count towards the chart :)

I guess it's to stop someone releasing a song for 1p and having a good chance of getting the most sales coz it's cheap.
Posted by neonplanet40 - Wed 16 Dec 2009 13:00
Doesn't matter about price though. Its all still down to the demand of a song. And thats what should count. Not how much it was.

Rules PDF, notes on page 5
3. Digital Minimum Dealer Price £0.40p : Only tracks with a minimum PPD of 40 pence or more shall be eligible for the Official Singles Chart. In the event that a record company has an alternative business model for the sale of downloads (i.e., one not based on a published dealer price), the price charged to the online digital retailer should not be less than 32 pence per track. OCC will monitor sales to ensure they are ‘genuine sales’. Where OCC judges sales not to be genuine, they may be excluded from the chart at OCC's absolute discretion.

Seems to be so much conflicting evidence.

EDIT: 7 of Amazon's top 10 downloads are £0.29

So if we all buy 1 copy from each of the sites, then this really could work!

F off Simon Cowall, we want xmas back!

That is the amount the Retailer has to pay. So Amazon is losing 11p on every Joe/RATM they sell.

ouch wrestling chair on the head….. thought you'd like that… :)

The Official Charts Company

That, right there, is another reason most of the music in the UK charts suck. Why do singles have to have stupid restrictions such as being no longer than 20 minutes, and having only 3-4 tracks? Is the utterly pointless “no Internet URLs in the inlay” rule still there, too?

Now i feel old.

Sorry ;)
But how about a compromise you will have had far better music than I did growing up during the mid-late 90's
It was just full of cheesey rubbish!

Woot, we're winning! http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/news/a191691/rage-extend-chart-lead-over-mcelderry.html

Common people, buy the track - dirt cheap (and awesome too…)!
Posted by Percy1983 - Wed 16 Dec 2009 15:43
We must double our efforts, all the old women can start buying the CD today.

Can I setup 5 amazon accounts up with different cards and get 5 sales in? (and repeat with others)

Either way between me and a few friends we should get a good few sales in later.
Posted by shaithis - Wed 16 Dec 2009 15:50
gogo buy more :)

Killing in the name of! \m/

Good song. :D
Posted by Perfectionist - Thu 17 Dec 2009 01:43
Only thing is, same record company owns both. X-factor sponsors are laughing all the way to the bank. :/ An exercise in how easy it is to start off a “wave” with social media
Posted by Stoo - Thu 17 Dec 2009 07:55
Sony BMG are huuuuuuuuuge, there's virtually no way of buying anything from any popular artist without it getting back to some major corporation..

But it's not about who gets money out of it, it about not having another dull xfactor track for xmas no 1!

Besides, at 29p/track it doesn't exactly break the bank, and is thoroughly worth it to wipe the smile off Cowells mug :)

Reclaim the charts people! ;)
Posted by BigFatCat - Thu 17 Dec 2009 08:30
I splashed out 29p from Amazon, and bought Fairytale of New York at the same time. Then I was bored and bought it on my iPod Touch too.
Posted by 1stRaven - Thu 17 Dec 2009 09:13
Got mine on monday.
Posted by gtech - Thu 17 Dec 2009 15:13
The machine always wins and that will be Sony, and as they own both BMG (RATM label) and syco (cowells label) they are the big winners…..

who really cares abour xmas 1, chart music, cowell, ratm!!!!!

Anyone listen to radio 5 this morning?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8418158.stm
Posted by Perfectionist - Thu 17 Dec 2009 23:34
asked them not to do it and they did it anyway - so buy Joe's record."
Human being most likely to have been crossed with a pig award:

Clearly the origin of the phrase “face for radio”…

Good to see them shown up. That radio station is basically The Sun of radio, the other poncey “presenter” “nicky” (yes, male) above is just as bad, did you see that “big questions” where they brought in a bunch of religious pundits and set up a load of strawmen arguments to attack gaming? Ending with (on modern warfare 2) “It's all slightly sick to me. Thank you every much, we'll leave it there.”…
Posted by Scott B - Fri 18 Dec 2009 09:15
I saw/heard that clip. Talk about missing the point; expecting someone like Zack de la Rocha to cowtow to the sensibilities of a large corporation. You can take a horse to water…
Posted by daniel_owen_uk - Fri 18 Dec 2009 09:33
Was rather chuckle worthy if you know the track.

Gotta say though SURELY they saw this coming?

A band called Rage Against The Machine, being asked not to sing a line that goes “**** you I won't do what you tell me”.

And R5 expected them to do what they were told?
Posted by shaithis - Fri 18 Dec 2009 11:34
Was funny as hell….goes to show how clueless the ppl at the radio station were…..I couldn't believe they really thought they would refrain from that line :D

I'm just waiting for the day now, when i can walk into a shop at Christmas and hear RATM playing sandwiched between Cliff Richard amd Band Aid, as it's a legitimate Christmas song now.

Wonder if it'll ever get onto http://www.amazon.co.uk/Best-Christmas-Album-World-Ever/dp/B00004YTXA

Hopefull 1 thing that will come out of this will be that they'll decided to come over and do a UK gig or 2.
Posted by AGTDenton - Sun 20 Dec 2009 19:05
Woohoo RAGE are number 1 :D

They are donating some of the proceeds to the charity Shelter.

Whereas Joe isn't.
Posted by Perfectionist - Sun 20 Dec 2009 20:56
I heard the song for the first time a couple of days ago when the RATM campaign started, I don't watch x factor and never will. First thoughts were ohmygiddyaunt… Second: Waiting for the announcement he is gay, like take that were proved to be! “backstreet boys”? nuff said.
Posted by Scott B - Sun 20 Dec 2009 22:42
Just saw on the news that Killing In The Name is the official Christmas number one.

Well played everyone who bought it. Nice to make a difference, however small.
