Meh
“You're not currently in a fibre optic cable area…”
so next generation I get less than 1Mb/s from my 10Mb line.
WOW!
Shame they're such a pile of **** isn't it? :)
They keep dropping flyers through my door for fibre optic broadband so i rang them to switch from ADSL and they said im not in a cable area????
“And it'll give free netbooks to those who sign up.”
How about VM users forego the netbooks and get some proper internet access?
Who do you regard of “proper internet access”?
i might look into switching
Well I have to say you're all very unlucky, I'm on a 10Mb Virgin line and I get 10Mb. If you're getting 1Mb then either something is very broken or you've breached the Acceptable Usage Policy and they've temporarily dropped you to a lower speed.
Now that 50Mb lines are here can they still call it ‘next generation’? Surely it's now ‘current generation’? Star Trek: TNG should be renamed Star Trek: The Generation Before DS9, Voyager and Enterprise.
i'm FORCED to use Virgin Media, the joys of an awful copper line. i get 10meg on my 10meg line, but throttling is AWFUL at times
I must be one of the “lucky” ones as my VM 10meg service is pretty faultless. Yes it's slightly less responsive at peak times, but that is to be expected. We're paying for a contended service. Yes the STM cap can occassionally get annoying, but something has to be done about the muppets that think they can constantly leech their connection flat out 24/7. Besides, it's not that hard to avoid downloading a ton of stuff during peak hours, just schedule it for later.
Other than that, my connection is pretty damn quick and is perfectly stable.
That upload speed trial sounds interesting, and appealling.
I'm thinking of dropping VM altogether, for the last 4 months they have screwed up our bill and are still charging us for the TV we cancelled 5 months ago and they even came to pick the bloody box up so how the hell!!!
Thing is I like downloading and I'm at least 5 miles from the local exchange so ADSL for me screams poop.
Could always get the old man to sign upto VM with the 10Mb package (we always get decent speeds from VM as the box is actually at the end of my frint drive) for the new customer price seeing as he lives next door.

Yep my 10mb is great as well (especially when thinking back to the bad old days of adsl - shivers)
Due to the lack of decent broadband in my area i'd go for Virgin if i could.
I'd get the 50mb line but even if i was on the 20mb i wouldn't care about the throttling. 25% of 20mb is 5mb which is about what i get here on a decent day.
i get better pings on my dads adsl than i did on virgin cable and back here im MUCH further from the exchange! My problem was overcrowded cabinets… i think. Speeds always used to drop to worse than dial up during 4-6pm but between 9pm till 4pm the next day i would generally get the max speed.
My way around any throttling, stupid as it may sound, is just to limit my downloads to 1/3 of their max speed peak hours and then 3/4 or 4/5 max speed over night. Might only really work with the aquiss system thouggh as they use a ‘black mark’ thing which i have never really got my head around.
If im in the area for it when i move out i will definately be buying into the better uploads… i hate the insanely inbalanced speeds, drives me nutz!

 need a calculator?

Dont see what the problem is with them, i get great service from all the lines i've had (2, 10, 20, 50).

Shhh. :secret: I meant 20mb. It was just how i did the maths in my head. :embarrassed:
Acceptable Use Policy my arse, more like
unAcceptable Use Policy. :angst:
Check this little detail:
Our Acceptable Use Policy covers a range of prohibited activities, but it mainly focuses on the most severe misuse of our services. That's activities that are:
* Illegal
* Unlawful
* Or inconveniencing other internet users.
(Points 1 & 2): Eeeerm, aren't illegal and unlawful pretty much the same thing? :O_o1:
(Point 3): Basically, their poor infrastructure, somehow,
justifies traffic management :rules:
And here's the traffic management, which applies to ALL users automatically and without notice:

P.S. Can you tell I'm a virgin customer?:embarrassed:
lol when i wa using them i knew it all inside out too :D
i must resist the tempation until the prices drop :D

Indeed, seeing that the 50meg has no throttling is REALLY tempting…
the price for 50meg when i only have cable with virgin… is NOT
this is what i get all the time when i test my speeds

and i have had all the speeds they do/did 2/10/20/50 and i do download a lot and i never got throttled on any of there speeds cant wait for the price to come down and to get 10mb up as well that will be very good and i cant wait for there 200mb service to start as well

Really? When did you use to have the 20Mb connection? How much would you download between 4-9 (and not get throttled)?
i got it about 2 months after they started doing 20mb and got rid of it for 50mb about 3 weeks ago and i download about 2gb of stuff a day or there abouts some days it is more like 10gb for games like mods/custom maps and so on and i was allways downloading a full speed or as close as i could if there upload was not that fast from where i was downloading at

Oh, I see :)
'A lot' for you is what I call my daily browsing
When I say downloading I mean a couple DVDs, 3-4 720p episodes (~1.2GB each) and some ‘minor’ xvid 700MB films…
I mean, why would you pay for a >20Mb connection otherwise?
I am on the 20Mb and download quite a lot! Yesterday while downloading from EA with their download manager i was capped for the first time! Not an enjoable experience, seeing my 2.3Mbps drop to 589Kbps.
Otherwise i've had no problems with them…. unless i need to ring them :telephone:…. or when they mess up my bill…… or when they change my TV package for no reason….
Great product, poor service is Virgin's problem!
I'm happy if i see 589kbps. :(
How stupid is that.
I have just signed a new 12 month contract with virgin and the chappy on the phone told me that all traffic shaping is going to stop on the 3rd of August on all Virgin packages. I don't know what truth is in it, but i told him that i would only agree to the contract based on that comment, and he guaranteed it would happen. They are also due to start offering line rental on that date. Fingers crossed!

Wow, that would keep me with VM simply because my connection is 99% up (think only 3 times down over 7 years lol) and is normally 9-10mb but when throttled it is very unstable so withouth throttling it would be the best supplier imo.

Sorry to say it but customer retentions will tell you anything in order to keep you. Unless you have it in writing, it's worthless. I wouldn't place any bets on the STM being dropped as something needs to be done about the muppets that leech their connection 24/7.
When I phoned up recently, they tried to persuade me that their V+ service was much superior to Sky+ and worth paying more for because of the HD capability. When I pointed out there is bugger all HD channels on VM she started waffling on about Ofcom and getting them to force Sky to share their content at better prices, yada yada yada - it was just all waffle. When I asked if they'd be reducing the cost of V+ as a result of Ofcom forcing the content to be cheaper at this mythical date in the future, I got no specific answer. Funny that. ;)

Who said anything about retentions department? Although i do agree that they will often feed you any old rubbish to ensure you stay with them.
Spoke to VM again this morning to follow up a tech fault (trying to get BT to fix my crackly line - nightmare…) and enquired to two people about the supposed drop of the traffic management; The first who was in tech support said he had not heard anything about it, but would not expect to hear about such a thing in his department, the second, who was in customer services, told me that it was correct and due to happen at the beginning of August, at the same time as they plan to start offering line rental.
Now i'm not going to say i told you so, because the last thing i want to do is quote a company like VM and put my name to such a claim, but two employees in two different departments giving me their assurance that this is happening makes it pretty believable to me.
As for the ‘muppets’ leeching their connection 24/7 i have only one reply; If i am paying for an
unlimited service and on the top package that company can offer, i want to be able to max my connection 24/7, and given the chance i will. If that company (or the company who provides the hardware) cannot give that service to all those people who pay for it then they should do two things; 1) Stop advertising for new customers to join their network, and 2) start cancelling the contracts of those who they cannot supply.

Sorry, I assumed you were referring to retentions when you mentioned about renewing your contract with them.
Thing is, if VM were going to drop traffic management then I'd have thought they'd be shouting about it, and I've heard nothing, despite keeping up to date with cable news recently. On the one hand it'd be nice to have it gone for the odd occasion when the peak-time limit is just triggered, on the other I hope the removal of it doesn't let the muppets start clogging up my internet during peak time with excessive downloading.
As for leeching your connection 24/7, well, my contract with VM has an acceptable use policy in it. I presume yours does too. I don't believe that running a connection flat out all day every day is an acceptable use of a
shared, contended internet service. If you want the ‘right’ to use your connection in such a way, I would think you need to go get a personal leased connection with an ISP, with 1:1 contention.
I just don't understand people moaning about traffic shaping unless they signed up before it was in place. If I buy a kettle with “this kettle doesn't work on Thursdays” written on the box I can't complain if it doesn't work on Thursdays. If I sign up to a broadband package which includes a traffic shaping policy I can't complain if my traffic gets shaped.
Well i had broadband from NTL before they changed their name to VM so didnt have any of this traffic shaping but i cant do anything about it and i have to live with it as we maybe moving in a few months and dont have a bt line.
I'm on 10mb but only during the day while at work. So poo on Virgin and there capped lies.
