He was a victim of his time, you can't judge past experiences by modern standards.

Indeed, we should be thankful that things have moved on and we now (at least most people) understand the errors of the past so we can make efforts not to repeat them.

Wishful thinking, when we're right in the middle of the growing ‘cancel’ culture. Oh well.

People seem to be so short sighted and it horrifies me, think about some of the things we say and do now, in 50 or 100 years time they might be outlawed or frowned upon. This is exactly what has happened with attitudes from his time to these days, human attitudes and what we deem to be right or wrong are constantly changing.

Exactly this. Some things are more accepted, but those same attitudes exist today towards others. In some ways it feels like progress we've made seems almost pointless if so many people feel like they're in a similar situation to back then.

Riiight, as if cancel culture is the problem and not actually a symptom of a problem.
Maybe if you had said white supremacy is one of the biggest problems facing the USA (and maybe UK) we could have all agreed.

I couldn't because that would be a blatant lie. For example, so many of these “anti-racists” were quick to jump the gun on the Colorado shooting and blame it on “white supremacy” because it's currently trendy to blame everything on whiteness. I would like to know what non white majority country the UK and US should strive more to be like. Are some people still racist? Yes. Are there improvements to be made? Also yes. Is there a growing trend that encourages revenge over even petty reasons rather than simply justice? Yes. Doesn't change the fact that plenty are choosing the USA and UK as their destination.

Besides, I'd like to point out that nothing before your comment was even related to race. This goes to show how successful certain people are to train your mind into a certain way of thinking. One that seems to encourage more division than unity. One that weaponizes tragedy.

The only symptom of cancel culture would be the need of the privileged to feel part of something, speaking on behalf of others, and projecting their own issues because people with mental issues have no idea how to cope. Cancel culture is about bringing others down rather than empowering others and bringing them up. You will get things blown way out of proportion eg Mr potato head, but then you have people that are doxed, banned from events, fired, or jailed for lacking political correctness.

People: coming into a thread about Alan Turing being on the cover of the £50 to complain about cancel culture is not a good look. Nor is defending white supremacy. Even if the attack is nothing to do with what's been said before, there's no good that can come out of it.

Cancel culture isn't real anyway, it's just a term made up by right-wing media magnates to describe the process of ‘choosing to whom you want to listen’. They'd like it such that we're always forced to hear what they have to say. They don't want free speech for all, they want free speech for themselves and freedom from the consequences.

“anti-racists”

Would you explain please why you've got this in quotes? What are you implying exactly?

Agreed, lets keep the thread on track please.

Isn't the £50 note the one no one uses? Think I've seen it only a couple of times.

The £50 note is used plenty in the world of gambling for example and I'm sure it's used in business plenty even if it's not a note that the bank provides to ATM customers.

So I went exploring and found the history of our banknotes interesting: https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/banknotes/withdrawn-banknotes

@wazzickle yeah, think when I saw and used it was when I needed to get some cash out from the bank cashier.

Not sure what the new notes are like but the old ones were stupidly big, remember getting paid in £50's once and they were stupid sized and had trouble getting them accepted at many places

Yeah they are annoyingly big and don't really fit in most wallets - though because they don't get accepted everywhere, carrying them in one really is just a way of showing off how much money you have. They work much better as a store of value to be transferred in bundles i.e. for high stakes gambling and so on.

The local drug dealers all have great wodges of Fifties. Seems they enjoy peeling off a few grand to pay their mechanic bills.
None have done the thing where they ‘fan’ a few K off into the air yet, like in a music video, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time… and not being outside where they'd just blow away.

^These situations are the only time I ever see £50 notes, so it doesn't matter to me who is on them.

Sorry, but I don't understand, if you solve those 12 puzzles, you get a gift or a job offer from GCHQ or nothing?

Probably nothing… but think I heard in the past, that's one of the ways they recruit people.
Example from hollywood that comes to mind is Mercury Rising.
