Nothing. That's the privilege of the newly redundant. No income = no expenditure. Thanks for procrastinating Sunak I'd still be employed if you hadn't dilly dallied extending furlough. Chump.

Same as all the other Black Fridays - Absolutely nothing.
It's mostly shops selling off old stock on the cheap, while others actually mark prices up.

I found a non-slip mat for £2.70! It was a whole £5 off.

Everything is either OOS or some vendors have been putting their prices up for Black Friday (on the day).

Anyone who waits to BF to buy has either missed all the deals already or is just gettung conned.

A bit of a “meh” non-event. You're lucky if the BF price is even a historical low.

As is usual, none of the good stuff go on sale but there are decent savings to be had for Christmas presents such as socks, toys, glassware etc. Tech related stuff: I bought an Insta360 camera early in the week with a small discount and today begrudgingly caved in and got a Oculus Quest 2 (not on sale or anything). I'll try and use a fake facebook account or something and see how that goes.

A humidifier, a USB C cable, an eye mask, and other bits and bobs. None of which were anything to do with Black Friday.

I did also snag an Echo Dot (3rd Gen) at £29, including two Phillips bulbs normally about £12 each. At effectively £6 or so, the Dot was too cheap to pass up. But …. Black Friday? More to do with clearing 3rd Gen stock now 4th Gen versions are out, I'd think. And yes, I would have bought a couple more bulbs anyway.

Am I massively excited about my Black Friday catch? Ho-hum. Yawn. :D

I bought a Samsung LTE Tablet to replace the cheap crappy Chinese one that I use as the head unit in my car.

I bought an 8TB WD My Book Hard drive to have a go at shucking. Why do internal drives cost more than external ones? Surely the bill of materials is higher with an externally powered and enclosed drive. Was rather hoping to get a new 3900x for under £400. I can wait.

Nothing, it has been totally rubbish. Only one thing i found i actually wanted and it sold out before I could grab one so stuff it.

The only tech related BF item was Shadow of the Tomb Raider, definitive Edition for a smidgen over £11. The rest included, but not BF related, 200m of polypropylene twine and a car windscreen cleaner (for my father to clean the condensation off the inside of his car and retain the insulation for his shed while he screws the internal panels on) and a couple of art books for me, it's an addiction (Magnetic Storm, I could immediately flip it for a small profit if I was so inclined, & a hard to get US only copy of Fantastic Paintings of Frazetta).

I did come close to getting a Pixel 4a for £319 but I just can't stomach paying that much for a phone… though there aren't that many sub 6" Android phones these days (and I'll be damned if I'm going to give any money to Apple).

This. I've been tracking item prices for several things, particularaly a 2TB NVMe SSD, and some of them jumped UP in price by £20 today having been cheaper Monday-Thursday

On Wednesday I was outbid on eBay for a second-hand Netgear Orbi mesh wifi satellite; the very next day I spotted a brand new one in Amazon's Black Friday deals for less than I had bid for the used one. They've been out of stock on Amazon for months and suddenly they had loads available on Black Friday, hmm.

Also, got a Bosch cordless jigsaw for £20 lower than it's been all year (and I've been keeping an eye on the price).

So there are some genuine bargains to be had on proper things that real people would want; you just need to know what you want and how much it normally costs, otherwise you can get fleeced.

was waiting to see if DDO expansions went on sale at steam, last time was a few years ago on black friday for around the £6 mark instead of £20 odd, so had somewhat moderate hopes but alas it was not meant to be. SSG just anounced that theyre removing all he expansions from sale on jan 9th and doing something new next year, will wait and see what that is.

so bought Shadow of War: definitive for £7.99 to add yet another game to the ‘play next’ pile.

and my mum asked whether there was anything i wanted for christmus and was poking about amazon. up popped a ‘related to stuff you’ve bought in the past' ad thing, and what do you know. its a book i had lost all hope of getting that i haven't seen in stock in 6 years. Gotrek & felix anthology. so nabbed that and the new 5th omnibus that came out yesterday, and ghoulslayer, that i didnt know existed.
is a 2nd hand copy, but i don't care.

thats it. a few books and a steam game that i was going to get in christmas sale at some point anyway.

A monitor which I had my eye on for a while, which had gone down to the lowest price I'd ever seen it, even with discount codes etc.

32GB (2x16GB) Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200 DDR4 RAM - £100ish

MSI MPG B550 GAMING EDGE WIFI Motherboard £140. With £27 Black Friday MSI provided cashback and Assassins Creed Valhalla PC Code also promised. Since I was intending to buy the game anyway, but wouldn't pay more than about £30, I consider the cost around about £80 in the end.

Considered buying a PSU today, but there weren't any real savings around and of course no luck with the 5600X CPU and 6800XT GPU either.

Prior to Black Friday, I spotted a Crucial P2 1TB M2 SSD for £85. Bought it as I thought it wouldn't be any lower than that on Black Friday. It wasn't, it was nearer it's normal price of £100 so happy I bought then

Just found out last week that I owe HMRC quite a few thousands in capital gains tax……..so no new toys for me for a while.
Posted by Output - Fri 27 Nov 2020 23:51
Not today specifically, but still in the Black Friday week sales, yesterday I went for the 12TB WD_BLACK D10 7200rpm External HDD that was pointed out on HUKD.

Mainly as if I recall correctly, it's a datacenter drive inside and the highest capacity available at that speed (for a good enough price when on offer anyway), and £187.99 seems to be the cheapest it has been thus far, so perfect to shuck and use as an internal drive.

Ouch.

Mind you, a few grand in CGT suggests a substantial capital gain in order to incur the tax on it, so that cloud has a definite silver lining. ;)

Nothing on Friday, although I did grab a couple of 1TB m.2 SSDs really cheap, last week.

The only thing I bought was some more dog poo bags from Amazon after a perusal of prices on things on my wish list, none of the prices had dropped enough (if at all) to entice me on those. Being a responsible dog owner is far more important.

Nothing. I'm another sceptic of the extent of real discounts.

Which week was this black Friday on anyway. Claimed discounts have been running for a week and will probably continue for another, if it was yesterday, I suspect.

Not a thing. Its a scam. Prices lower at other times of the year, it is now just a marketing ploy to use against the dim. At one point black friday did actually mean super deals, now its meaningless.

Well, yes and no ;)

Got divorced at the start of this year, so we had to sell the house and half the proceeds went to my ex.

I also owned a one-bedroom flat that I'd let for a number of years, and had to live in that for six months while all the financial stuff was agreed (I strongly recommend not living in a one-bedroom flat when you have two kids living with you at weekends, during lockdown….looking back I've no idea how I got through that period without losing my mind!)

Eventually I was able to sell that and put the proceeds towards the 2-bedroom flat I live in now. The CGT was the result of selling the 1-bed flat as, apart from the 6 months I lived in it, it was classed as a second property. I know I was fortunate to have a second property in the first place but, financially, the divorce has set me back massively so getting that huge bill for CGT just as the dust was settling was a kick in the proverbials (especially as I don't have thousands of pounds lying around in cash, it's all tied up in my current property). Oh, and they want the money by January :D

All things considered, 2020 was a year to forget. Roll on 2021!

Double ouch. Treble ouch, even. An ‘annus horribilis’, indeed.

I'm sorry to hear that …. on several levels. I didn't intend to poke at what was, obviously, a rather tender spot. Sorry about that. It's not much consolation, but I suppose at least it gets those kicks out there, to be dealt with, and hopefully the New Year sees things move, as PeterB would have said, onwards and upwards.

By chance a TP-Link WiFi/Bluetooth card dropped from 55 to 40. Otherwise a CPU I was hoping to get went up in price. And this morning the CPU magically came back down. Such a con now. If I was a retailer I wouldn't participate.

Looking at the positive, it was probably a slightly better bill than the potential of a much higher one if Rishi plays around with the CGT rules, as recently reported. I know that isn't much solace though, especially with an 18-28% charge on any theoretical gain you've made. I went through this 19 years ago and had a similar problem.

Maybe International-Buy-Nothing-Day should be moved to the Friday after Thanksgiving…

EDIT: seems it already is
In North America, the United Kingdom, Finland, and Sweden, Buy Nothing Day is held the day after U.S. Thanksgiving, concurrent to Black Friday;

Hey no worries, I can laugh about it all now- with the possible exception of the tax bill. And despite the ups and downs this year has brought I still have lots to be thankful for, including a job, and two sons who drive me batsh1t crazy but whom I adore :D

And yes, onwards and upwards for 2021 :)

Id had my eye on the iiyama G-Master 34" UltraWide Quad HD 144Hz IPS 1ms Gaming Monitor for a while, seeing as the old TV I was using has now gone to my lad. Id been watching the prices for a little while hoping they would drop for Black Friday, but no. Picked it up at the price its been steady at for a month or so though, which was actually £50 cheaper than when I first saw it. Otherwise though, diddly squat!

Where from, for how much? Keeping my eye out but don't want to pay more then RRP which is £280 (and some places like curries pc world do sell them at that price theoretically). Everywhere I saw was either massively overpriced, sold by some dodgy unknown website, or just out of stock.

my prediction is a little wait will be your friend. Frustrating but give it time. I went through this with cpus last year. Amazon suddenly got a glut in mid Dec. Trick is to keep checking frequently and don't hesitate once they're in
Posted by EasterEEL - Mon 30 Nov 2020 13:38
Nothing tracked several items including a mobile phone. Some prices on Amazon were actually were expensive than on Prime Day about six weeks ago and I couldn't buy on Prime day as went out of stock with a few hours.

John Lewis had one item properly reduced but out of stock with a few hours sadly before I had purchased. Curry's were a bit cheaper on two of the items but not enough to panic me into buying.

A total damp squib, won't ever waste my time on this again.

Oddly some perfume for the wife which wasn't in the black Friday offers at Amazon. Must have been a price match as it was down almost 15% from the long term price (use Keepa plugin people!). Otherwise nothing. It really is getting more and more rubbish. It just seems to be designed to flog stuff off they can't sell that was artificially raised in price a month ago.
