That might work better when docking with 1440p 27“ monitors, though I think the pixel density at 17” is a bit much for my old eyes and I would be forever cleaning my glasses to read it.

Never mind that, the craziness for 4K on 15.6“ or even 14” screens never made sense.
A good way to ruin your battery life though.
Maybe people place the screen at a 20cm distance to take advantage of PPI, making it also a good way to ruin your eyesight?
Not directly comparable, but there is a reason why the Realmi 6i which top of the phone battery table

has a 720p screen. Sure the 5Ah (or 5,000 mAh as the phone people like to call it) battery helps but the lower res screen does too.

It's the misleading marketing of a Laptops GPU capabilities that needs to be addressed next.

A mobile 2070 is only really equal to a desktop 2060. And the same is true for the 2080, which is only equal to the 2070 Desktop part.

Its a really lousy practice that relies on purchaser ignorance to facilitate such misleading branding.

I can kind of see it for an 18“ or 20” laptop. Maybe 17", but even then I'm not sure I'd really benefit from the higher resolution, or find the tradeoff worth decreased battery life or need to upgrade to a faster GPU to take advantage of the pixels.

Still makes more sense than 4K on a laptop, though.

This has been the case for a long time. I remember buying a GeForce 8600M GT, which was about as powerful as a desktop GeForce 8500. I wouldn't count on nVIDIA and AMD rectifying that next year.

Don't use a laptop for gaming. You'll have a horribe time with blue screen crashes, noisy fans, low framerates and backlight bleed on the screen

Actually looking forward to this, 1080p is a dreadful resolution for doing work on.
Can't stand it on my laptop, not enough height and not enough width to have two windows open side x side comfortably without having to scroll around each page. That saves me looking to upgrade until these have been released for a few months. I can rejoice.

But the text is tiny and I would get a headache.

1440p is awesome at 27“ because you get lots of usable pixels.

If i have to touch the scaling controls to make it usable, or need the screen right up in my face to see the pixels, then that's a lose IMHO.

I can cope with a 13” 1080p screen, so scaling that up a 17“ 1440p screen is probably right on the edge for me as well. But I don't want to lug a 17” laptop around.

Perhaps I should just admit I don't like laptops :)

There are plenty of 1440 laptops even now, the problem is a battery life.

I'll be honest the scaling option is actually very good now in W10. My work laptop is a 13“ 4K screen but it's scales really well, I think it's at 150% but I've not used it for a while now so can't remember exactly. Old Apps aren't so good admittedly, but for what I use it for it's fine, not perfect. But I was completely unaware it was scaling when I got it.

A trip to Currys will be in order before purchase.
I'll be looking at the 15 & 17”, assuming they will actually have something reasonable in store.

I'd rather have a 5:4 than 1080p on any screen for work purposes though.

I mean having been using a 2560x1600 MacBook for the last couple of years, I can tell this will be a much appreciated change (even if you dont get the wonderful 16:10 aspect ratio for productivity). I'm really not sold on 4K laptops.

I'm sure it is, but for me the whole point of 1440p is to get more text on a screen. If I have a 1440p screen and I scale it 33%, then I might as well have bought a 1080p screen :)

Certainly odd when they got the GTX10 series so close (dependent on cooling and laptop-standard CPU pairing of course), only to let the gap open wide again.

The Max Q business only makes things worse. Most people I talk to who are thinking about getting a gaming laptop assume that Max Q is actually a bonus, which is a reasonable assumption since it's trumpeted as if it's extra power or something, rather than being even less that the raw number laptop card. And then 3rd parties come along with the unofficial Max P branding, which cements the problem even though they're trying to establish a “better than vanilla” category since it appears to legitimise the false impression customers have of Max Q.

Just wonder, Is is possible to see the difference in graphic on such a small screen ? I am talking more about games, than other things.
